^ That looks excellent in the green.
Those Turtles with the textured dials are called 'King Turtles'. They have a sapphire crystal and a better movement and are more expensive than the standard Turtles.Johnny 89 said:
Also, anyone have the model number for the Turtle? I've never seen that dial before, looks great. eccles said:

Finally got around to restoring the first “proper” watch that I ever bought myself. Got it back in ‘99 I think when I was 16, and thought the kinetic movement was the coolest thing ever at the time, being a mix of an automatic mechanical and quartz. Sadly the bracelets on these just fall to pieces once the rubber perishes, as it’s an unusual design of rubber with a steel “shell” on top of it, the rubber on mine disintegrated and it’s been festering at the bottom of a drawer for ~20 years since!
Anyway, stumbled across a company on instagram that stocks all the parts for them (Seiko won’t repair these any longer) so I sent it off battered, not holding any charge, and with no bracelet, and it’s back and almost as new. Well chuffed!
Enjoying a bit of nineties nostalgia on the wrist currently!

Dagnammit - I junked a Kinetik a few years ago because it just wouldn't hold charge. I feel pretty silly now.
Cosmetic issues aside, kinetics that won't hold charge usually only need a capacitor kit, which I've always found easily online. I think the most I ever paid was under 25 quid and that was including a caseback seal since it was for a diver. With the basic tools they're not hard to DIY. Fiddly, but not difficult. There's a ton of stuff on YouTube about it.
The centre screw in the rotor can be tricky - I had to make my own screwdriver for the job as the slot is extremely fine.

ETA: if you take the rotor out and leave it out, they work fine as a straight quartz watch with a cheap battery, but without the self charging functionality obvs. The best features of kinetics for me are their superb accuracy and reliability.

It's an SPB381, 'Marine Green' GMT. I have just bought it from eBay as a 35th birthday present to myself. It seems beautifully made and I am hoping to wear it regularly in my rotation of 3 main watches, although it seems so lovely I will probably restrict it to my less messy days at work (mechanic)
Very compelling watch that feels high-class on wrist - the ceramic bezel insert, sapphire crystal, creamy lume plots and flashes of gold from the GMT hand and red on the seconds hand all lend a great deal of character and visual appeal.
Impressive finishing also - particularly where the polished and brushed case surfaces meet, the polishing to the inside of the lugs and the way the hands are polished on one half and brushed on the other.
I can live with (ignore) the date window. If only they’d signed the crown and added some additional micro-adjust on the clasp, it would be near perfect.

Received my 6458-600A from Japan today, it’s bloody small compared to my daily turtle!
Bought it as the (at least the case back) date of manufacture is the month/year of my birth so kinda cool in that respect and who doesn’t love an 80’s mid-size diver
Going off to Joe @ Anglesey to check it over and assuming all good it’ll be put on a 19mm black GL831

Same. This has become my daily, as robust, not as heavy as a braceletted Breitling (lending itself better for sport / biking etc)
Had it probably 10+yr, never serviced, but sent off today as it is getting now to be a fast runner (picking up maybe 2 / 3 minutes a day !
