My first watch buy of 2016 was one of those decisions made about 3mins after hearing about the brand. I saw a tweet about a new British brand called Marloe and their first model, the Cherwell. Seems they started a kickstarter campaign looking, iirc, for about £30,000. When I checked a moment ago they'd raised almost £100,000, so going well so far. The watch is a Sea-Gull hand wound movement underneath. The earlier you back the project, the cheaper you get it for. I paid £168. Seems to me you get a very smart looking, British made mechanical watch for next to nothing thanks to a Chinese movement. Ok, Sea-Gull isn't going to get anyone particularly excited, but they seem reliable enough. Here's a pic from the Kickstarter site:

The downside being I now have to wait until June for delivery.

I've been considering something more classically sized for a while and recently tried a DJ for size, having a 40mm cased Spring Drive already in the watch box and always wanting to try Seiko's trick 9f quartz I thought I'd give this a whirl.

I'm now going to ban myself from TZ's SC unless I'm selling!

Bought a cool looking old watch off a recent auction on Chrono24. Going to need a bluffer's guide to help prevent embarrassing lack of knowledge about it. I know absolutely nothing about these.
Edit: nothing other than some relationship to Breitling that a quick google turned up!

The link for the website does not appear to work and unfortunately a lot like some of these schemes, hope this is one of the ones that actually delivers.https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2140352403/th...

and he's buying it actually in Geneva. I think that's the Rolex building over the river?
Yup, it's Geneva, but it looks like a view from the Les Bergues hotel (Four Seasons), looking across at the Rue du Rhone / Quai General Guisan direction. No Rolex buildings in view.Easy_Targa said:
Soviet era submarine clock. A bit heavy for the wrist at 2Kg but I thought you would be interested anyway.
Anyone know what the powdery white stuff on the hands is?
Should I be afraid of it?
Presumably it is a mix of a radioactive isotope (given the age, perhaps radium [nasty] or promethium) and a phosphorescent material to emit light when hit by the alpha (radium) or beta (promethium) particles from the isotope. If it is radium, it will still be highly radioactive (half life 1600 years!) and you will be able to get it to light up by applying a new thin coat of a suitable phosphor. However it looks very friable and so there would be the danger of spreading it about and ingesting it as you did so... fortunately alpha particles are stopped by the glass in front of the hands, but the beta particles may get through and radium also emits gamma rays which don't care about a bit of glass... you could ask a friendly physics teacher to let you borrow their geiger counter to see how badly you are being fried...have you finished making children? .Anyone know what the powdery white stuff on the hands is?

Probably best not to take off the front cover.

Ah,ok that doesn't sound too good. What's left of the material on the hands is powdery, but on the (not so) bright side it does not glow in the dark. Probably best not to take off the front cover.

Have finished with baby making but was hoping to stick around for a couple more decades firing blanks so best I get it tested.
I know a science teacher so that's a good idea thanks.

It's more about having a watch that isn't just a copy of something else, and from a brand which is rightly creating its own identity.
The Black bay is not a copy, it is a reinterpretation of a vintage Tudor sub, and a very good modern interpretation at that. Both the Rolex and Tudor Subs were designed alongside each other in 1953 and then they were released to the public within months of each other.
There is also nothing wrong with an ETA top grade, it is a very reliable movement which is easily serviceable.

I have a hard time believing the avg. customer for this watch would buy it over a Sub or SD, were the price gap not so great.
As I was buying something nice for the OH's significant birthday coming up I saw one of these.
Which is now in my possession and achieved a nice discount of about 22% off the 2 watches. :-)
A little article on A Blog to Watch on it.
