I can confirm that a colleague purchased a bimetal Datejust from an AD in September 2012. He negotiated a 20% reduction on list price, then claimed the VAT back when he left the country.

I'm not going to name the AD, but they're based in a south coast seaside resort.

Bi-metal are easier to get a discount on and he must have had overseas residency to get UK VAT back.

Hi all,
Sorry for the bump.ive been looking at a number of Rolex models for a year or two without going the final yard.i now have an inheritance and I'd like to get something to keep from it. I know that this would have been approved of and my love of watches is probably his fault.

I have a number of breitlings so wanted something else and more special.my original thought was a yacht master platinum finish but having tried one on today I've crossed that off and I'm left with a submariner bi colour either blue or black.

Any advice and thoughts re discounts and generally gratefully received.i want to get the right watch given that I intend to keep it forever.

Thanks.

If history tells us anything, it's don't buy bi-metal watches.

If you must go bi-metal, the blue dialled sub is always nice and is a steal second hand.

Yup. Drop like stones.

As to the original topic; my sister got 13%, or thereabouts as wasn't listening intently, off a family member's 18K Oyster strapped date recently without a lot of haggling.

It's not really fair to give people a hard time about not divulging where they got discounted watches because some of these discounts are due to building up relationships with ADs, if an AD does something for you and begs you not to blab about it it's a bit stupid to blab about it on a public forum and risk losing that relationship isn't it!!!

Anyway, a few months ago I got 14% off a Deepsea, 20% would have been amazing but I was grateful for the 14%!

I know a manager of a large chain that retails Rolex , I've bought three watches off him , I fancy a YM but he will not budge on price, I've even showed him I can get a good discount elsewhere albeit on the grey market and he'll not move an inch on price.

Reckons his hands are tied and head office will come down on him hard for discounting.

He'll not even discount a Rolex service.

All the end result from pressure from Rolex themselves.

I collected a new Submariner (116610LV) last week and absolutely no movement on the list price. If I'd chosen not to buy then, the watch would have moved to the next person on the list.

Was offered a 15% discount on a new Breitling 44 GMT as a starter without even asking though.

I think I was very lucky with the DSSD

I got 23% on my Skyland (just as the became Avengers with silver numerals and hands, I wanted the white stencilled ones) but only 10% on my Seawolf Code Yellow!

I think the only thing on offer at the Breitling shop on Bond Street is a choice of "gift"

20% + discounts on breitlings seem feasible here in SG - but even with that the second hand value retention will be a lot less than a Rolex ( IMO)

Totally agree, it just softens the blow slightly!!

Some ADs were selling the Skyland as an Avenger for over £4k which would have made my eyes water!

It is fair, as if that's how they are getting it the discount, then they should just shut and not brag about it, unless it's just because they enjoy bragging about it.

First time Rolex buyer walking into any or any number of high street Rolex dealer is very unlikely to get any discount on a new Rolex, especially a SS sports one.

The question was this - "Has anyone managed to obtain a discount on a new Rolex recently?"

The answer was yes!

So now the OP / first time Rolex buyer knows that it IS possible!

About this time last year I bought my SS Sub Date, as a first Rolex purchase.

I did lots of homework, which basically revealed lots of people who said they had discounts, but with no info to back it up.

I used (and I say this with NO affiliation in any way!) authorized dealer Moody's 1883 in Nantwich.

They did a tax-free deal, since I was in Afghanistan (military, go figure) and I was legally entitled to buy tax-free goods.

So I had 20% off, but joining the military and going on an op-tour isn't a practical option for most, ha!

I'll add that Moody's 1883 were consummate professionals, friendly and bent over backwards to accommodate me.

Highly recommended.

Don't always think a bi metal sub is a bad investment. I paid £3500 new for my blue sub bi metal in 2006 and I just sold for £4750 and I wore it everyday.

^ this.

TT sport models are far more wearable than a TT Datejust. I'm not surprised you did so well on it.

I got 10% off my Sub 116610LV when I bought it new in December 2011 from my local AD.

surely we won't see any time soon the kind of rises in RRP that have happened over the period you mention?

at least I hope not biggrin

Hello again.since my earlier post regarding bi metal subs I've had a rethink partially as a result of the helpful comments - so thanks for the replies.

I had another look at the ss sub and also tried on the deep sea which I felt much more at home with and I was immediately certain it's for me,which I hadn't felt with the others.it could possibly be because I'm used to big watches as I have a few breitlings including a super avenger.not being small they seem to fit me ok while things like the Daytona look too small.

I was ready to buy if offered a deal but the best 2 dealers would do was an extra year warranty and 3years interest free which I don't really need or want as an inheritance is being used to pay for it.

So the question I now have is are there any deals to be had on the deep sea which I suspect is nowhere near as popular as the ss sub.

Thanks again.
