FANTASTIC!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

The micro adjuster on the clasp is very cool isn't it and the whole watch feels as though it will last forever don't you think!
Thanks Don - your earlier comments were a big help and did influence my final decision.

I agree it feels so well put together and a great piece of engineering.

I was always happy with my Breitlings but this feels totally different and a big step ahead.I love the micro adjusters well - a great idea.

How does an AD throw in a discounted service Rolex? Is their own service Or are they discounting their mark up when sending it off to Bexley?

Excellent!!!!

Having Breitlings makes switching to the smaller Rolexes harder, if I want to wear my GMT2C I literally have to not wear a watch at all for a week otherwise it feels way too small!

I never doubt my Breitling`s build quality BUT the Deep Sea really does feel different doesn`t it!!!! (and so it should)

I guess the latter.

It's a good thing for them to throw in really as

a) There's no guarantee the customer would have taken the first service through them anyway

and

b) it's a loss of income pushed way, way into the future.

They did a tax-free deal, since I was in Afghanistan (military, go figure) and I was legally entitled to buy tax-free goods.

So I had 20% off, but joining the military and going on an op-tour isn't a practical option for most, ha!
Minor point, but VAT free is not 20% off wink
How is it not?
VAT is at 20%, so VAT free is 20% off the retail price.
Or am I missing something?

Vat is charged at 20% of the net sales price, therefore if and item is £10 + VAT, the calcualtion is £10 + 20% = £12.00. However, if you work out how much the VAT element of £12 is, divide the £2.00 VAT element by £12 = 16.67% of the total.

To work out the net amount of a retail price excluding VAT, divide the total price (assuming there are no other charges in the price that dont include VAT) by 1.2, this gives you the VAT exclusive price. Therefore, a watch sold for £5750 inc VAT is £4791.67 ex VAT. The VAT amount is £958.33 or 16.67% of the total price.

If you simply deduct 20% from the retail price, you would have a figure of £4600 which is incorrect.

Think I've been through that a couple of times on here before. Some people can't do the reverse calculation.

Am I that obvious I wonder?
I expect that the answer is yes and it'll probably work as well.

Don - you are right about the change of size issue with the Breitlings especially the Super Avenger.I used to avoid that if I wanted to use the aerospace otherwise I was constantly checking it was still there.

last year we were in Copenhagen with some friends from the US and we fancied an IWC Portuguese Yacht Club, so the friend from the US bought the watch after I'd negotiated a discount for them and then claimed the VAT back as we left the airport.

ended up quite a decent discount.

I suppose the same would apply to any other country that you can reclaim the duty (unlike the bloody sales tax in the US)

Not quite. You don't actually pay the 20% in the first place. Instead you are given a form that gets stamped at the airport by customs and dropped in the post back to the retailer. You get 30 days to return the form to the retailer or your card will be charged the outstanding MVA. Norway MVA is 25%, but as per the UK vat calcs above, that is like a 20% discount on retail price. It makes Rolexes and other brands cheap compared to attainable UK prices. Colleague of mine negotiated 10% off a new black/blue GMT in Norway 3 weeks ago. Had he been a visitor, he would have saved further 20% on the discounted price. New GMT here is about £6,050 = £4,840 after tax free.

Now, it's up to you if you risk not declaring it coming into the UK!

I had a look at a GMT today at Mappin and Webb in Cambridge, the first thing that the sales guy said was "we can't give any discounts, but we can do interest free credit" it put me off buying from him

I am going to Oslo soon. Do you think I will be able to negotiate any discount on a submariner date in black ? Common watch. I just need to pay a deposit in advance of collection. Is it as simple as deducting 25 per cent off the Norwegian price and converting to pounds?

As per my post above, it's a deduction of 20% off Norwegian price. Call ahead, make sure it's in stock, and perhaps they will ask for a deposit. I think there's more than one Rolex AD in Oslo. Visit both! You may get a discount for asking, but make sure you do get the tax form stamped at the airport!

Remember if you don't tell customs, you run the risk of confiscation, at minimum
