GG wore a gold Cartier.
It's a long time since I saw that film! I did think that he wore a Day-Date.My mistake. However the point still stands - it was about the type of person more than anything else. I probably just had a chip on my shoulder. I don't know now
Looks like a Cartier Santos. ETA movement in there am I right?
On that basis a Rolex is arguably a better watch, having an in-house movement and all. But Cartier is considered more chic, isn't it?

But hang on... "Greed is good".

A number of recent actions have made me no fan of the company (access to the L&F register, illegal service cartels with fixed prices, greedy price rises etc), although I still like their watches.
I don't get these comments at all.L&F register is still accessible, although an AD, has to put in the call on your behalf. The extra service was pulled from the general public as demand was too high, so instead of providing a poor facility to all, they chose to limit access as described to maintain a set level of service. What's wrong with that?
What illegal service cartel? As a sole provider of maintenance and parts for their product, they have set pricing. A cartel is when more than two companies providing the same product agree a set price, recent examples of this have been the energy and fuel companies.
Greedy price rises.
Although we may not like the price hikes, the market as a whole can obviously sustain them as they wouldn't have happened otherwise. And as a business why wouldn't you charge as much as you can for your products?

To be honest I'm going to have to disagree with a lot of this bks.
I've got a Submariner and my wife has a Date Just. A few of my colleagues have various Rolexes and other brands of quality watches and none of us go on about the affordability of the watch or the fact they hold money.
Getting bored with these sweeping statements. You said earlier it was not reverse snobbery.....it comes across like that when you make generalisations and assumptions about Rolex owners and their apparent attitudes.
I'm with you there, then again I would be wouldn't I. As a fellow Rolex owner, were all the same, big brash and flash tossers aren't we?I've got a Submariner and my wife has a Date Just. LOL
Funnily enough I never knew there was a down side to owning a Rolex until I started looking in this forum
Had mine for over 15 years now, worn every day regardless of what I'm doing (working in the tools back in the day, swimming, biking etc) & touch wood it's never been a problem.
Mum & dad had one & I've just bought one for my other half as a wedding day gift., pretentious? Who cares! Mines been services once in all that time & has never missed a beat, only thing it needed was a new glass where I chipped the edge whilst on the piss years ago.
Every so often I look at other watches, I'd quite fancy a leather strapped one maybe to wear when I'm dressed up. But I dunno, I guess I just like what I've got-& the thing just keeps on ticking, it's been a great thing as far as reliability is concerned.
Insofar as other people's views on it, I'd say I'd be lucky if anyone mentions it once a year & that's only if they're a watch buff I'd guess-maybe I mix in the wrong circles! I'm much more likely to comment on someone else's if I see they're wearing something fancy.
But mine, a plain old steel datejust seems nicely understated

I bought my Omega firstly because both my Mum and a chap at work both owned Omegas for all their adult lives, and in both cases, the watches are still going strong, some 50 years later.
But secondly, I bought it because it just looks like a simple, stainless steel diving watch at first glance.
Also, having just had it serviced (and I wear it every day more or less) - what has made me happiest is the jeweller returning it back to me, and commenting that the insides look 'as good as new.'
That'll do me.
TBH that could be said of just about any watch apart from the real budget ones. I have Eternamatics, base model Seiko's and Citizens, Hamiltons and many others, they all are in good condition with movements that look like new after 50 years. Many of these watches receive positive comments when worn. But secondly, I bought it because it just looks like a simple, stainless steel diving watch at first glance.

I've only had comments about my Sub a handful of times in the 5 years I've owned it. My PO has been commented on a lot but that was more so to do with it being orange strap and bezel, now has a black strap and completely off the radar. My TAG 2000 that I got for my 21st years ago got the most comments. For some reason some people use to say it was fake when it was not, very weird.Had mine for over 15 years now, worn every day regardless of what I'm doing (working in the tools back in the day, swimming, biking etc) & touch wood it's never been a problem.

One scene I laugh at for some reason is just after he has helped Eli Wallach. Wallach does that bird whistling sound and Michael Douglas smiles and looks at him at the same time as if to say what the fk!?I remember laughing when they handed him tha enormous brick phone back too.

A friend of my fathers saved up and bought himself a Rolex, but he hardly wore as everyone took the mickey saying it was a fake.It does seem a major buying factor is whether a watch "gets comments."
I've been told a cheapo Nixon looks nice! When buying a watch I have to like it, it has to be nuclear bomb proof and errrmmmm, that's about it.
I do get asked the time a lot when surfing but its tucked under my wetsuit sleeve ;-)
What appeals on this forum is those that happily wear a cheap watch or a really valuable one without worrying about comments, value or anything.

Only a couple of people have commented on my Daytona. One is a colleague who's a watch fan himself and another was someone with a fake.
Anyway, we need to get back on topic. Gordon Gekko. Who actually thought the second Wall Street was good?
Interested to know the answer because I am wondering about hiring the DVD. Is that even possible now Blockbuster's gone?Anyway, we need to get back on topic. Gordon Gekko. Who actually thought the second Wall Street was good?
