I like that, particularly given your history.

Bravo, Sir.

General question, figure your one of the best guys to ask.

Is it possible to make a ring thicker, I have a ring I inherited from my dad so I don't want to lose its beaten up and worn out charm, but I would also like to wear it without being worried that its being smashed beyond repair.

not sure how to post pics up, but can I email you to see if anything is possible?

How do you mean 'thicker'? I assume you mean the shank (bit that goes from the sides under the finger).

A lot of people ask me to make the shank thicker but actually it's something that cannot be done without some horrendous joints and future complications. It's a lot of work for very little gain anyway. The way to make the shank thicker is actually by cutting the old shank off at the shoulders, where it is relatively unworn and then fitting a new shank to the correct spec. Much more effective job and minimal consideration needed when doing work further down the line. Send me a pm with some pics and i can give you some figures. I can keep the head unpolished if needs be too!

Ha! You'd be amazed what our annual sweeps yield. Actually, if you saw that program 'gold sellers and diamond geezers', the girl who does the workshop rounds, Leigh Stutman, is the one who comes to pick up my stuff. She's quite the character.

Hi Eddie,

If you has a bit of gold the size in the pictures, what would it make? I think it weighs just under 3 grams...(kitchen scales flick between 2 and 3!)

20 years ago I melted down my mothers and my fiancé's mothers wedding rings with the welder, and had a new wedding ring made for my now wife... this is what's left over... I was thinking of asking you to make something...

Engagement rings normally weigh from 2g and upward so you could have a light weight solitaire made. Or you could add it to more metal to have something more substantial.

What carat is it?

No idea of the carat... both rings were from around 1940, so what ever they made rings from in those days!

would it make a pair of earing's?

No probs. Just bear in mind that the more intricate the design the more it'll cost / more labour involved. Also, bear in mind that it will be hand made so try to imagine how the human hand could construct it. I don't have a magic wand despite what people say. lol

Look forward to hearing from you.

Eddie,
Having realised the day before my wedding (in Jakarta) I didn't have a wedding ring for myself I had to pop out and get one at the rush.
The selection in Indonesia is shocking and usually involves lots of diamonds.
Ended up with 6mm band of gold, with a dull silver centre section and a dinky diamond in the middle.
The dull silver region is already starting to wear through after two months and looking at the Rhodium plating you do is this an option to brighten up this ring?
I presume it lasts for a decent period and doesn't wear down too quickly?
I'm happy with the design of the ring but a better colour would keep me a bit happier, also if I haven't lost it by then, a small nudge to make it a touch smaller may be on the cards.
I'm still in Indonesia but my parents live in Dorset, I'll be over in March for the Jurassic Coast Challenge and staying till mid April. Is 3 weeks long enough for you to do this with due notice, and more importantly, will you still be doing this work next year?

Cheers,
Phil

God, you were on the ball with the wedding plans then eh! I bet your missus was chuffed. lol

Ref the rhodium plating (without seeing it), yes the centre bit will be rhodium plated to make it nice and white without the expense and difficulty of adding a platinum section. The longevity of the plating depends on how you wear the ring, it's only a plating after all. If used heavily every day the rhodium will only last days to months. Worn carefully it could last years. Depends on the thickness of the plate. Also, swimming pools, cleaning and beauty products etc all take their toll on the metal and any plating.

Timing wise, it's only a small, circa £25 job if im not reading the above wrongly. You could potentially drop it off early one morning and have it at 4pm that day.

The ring was the last thing that I had forgot to organise. Don't worry, her diamond ring was all sorted and arranged by her. I just had to pay for it. She arranged the wedding party in Jakarta, I arranged the ceremony and event in the UK.
Thanks for the info, I'll get in touch closer to the time and come over to your shop before a day out in Bournemouth.

Sorry there are no build pics for this one (left phone at the hospital when i went for my CT scan yesterday....... got all clear 6 months since last scan though).

Customer came in with 2 diamonds from an old pair of earrings, a desire for sapphires and a sketch. I created this:

Thanks to all the PHers who have contacted me regarding various jobs. Can't remember how many commissions I've had since this thread started but your interest has been much appreciated. Glad to hear you're / your other halves are all happy. Great fun having a few of you down to make your own too. Trobleatmill, I look forward to seeing you next weekend.
