Unusual job on the bench today
Discussion
Got another watch case today. PH guys keeping me busy and always happy to help. Case is 9ct yellow/rose and is worn through in various places, mostly at the lug ends. Here's how we get her back to fighting form:
As you can see, the ends have holes in that look like Steptoe's socks:
The back is a bit tired and dented too:
Because it's 9ct and very thin it makes sense to use a higher grade of metal to repair with. I've cut some strips of 18ct yellow gold which I'll solder with 'tenacity' (a flux solution) and 9ct easy solder:
One soldered:
Two:
Four:
Profiling the ends also reveals any holes or errors. Of which there were none:
And then the tops get levelled out:
It's buffed down to a finer grade in prep for polishing:
Now to sort out that dented back:
Using my special 'pusher' the dent is lifted out and it's given a very light buff to avoid making it any thinner than it already is:
Boiled in the acid it's ready for polishing:
Once polished it gets an ultrasonic in fairy liquid and water:
As you can see, the lugs are slightly yellower than the rest of the watch due to the 18ct we applied. The whole case has lost it's antique look too:
To give it back the antique look and to hide the yellow I plate it with a bit of light rose gold:
Done!

Think we're going for the stones set in platium with an 18ct white gold band. We're told it's best of both worlds?
See how it turns out!
Who's making it for you? See how it turns out!
Got a scan today so updates will follow good results.
We're popping to Melbourne for the F1 come March, so will go looking for more designs there. She wants an asymmetric design, so not as common.
Good luck with the scan.
