Your advert comment has however highlighted that you and I will never share a hot shower, which is unfortunate.
Think you are being a bit over sensitive... let's be honest, the thread is a bit of advert but, as you say, people enjoy it so that's fine as far as I am concerned.

My original comment was just to offer a different opinion on the ultrasonic cleaners, that's all.
A difference of opinion is subjective, that's the way of things.
The advert comment; relevant or not , simply to me as an observer came across as spiteful and uneccessary. Now I know you are in the same arena, even more so.

To suggest that the ultrasonic wears away the metal isn't correct in my opinion.
Try putting a strip of bog standard kitchen foil in an ultrasonic cleaner for a minute or two then holding it up to the light to see if ultrasonic can wear away metal. Your opinion is demonstrably wrong.

Read again what I wrote... it really doesn't warrant the aggressive attitude IMO.

Nowt to stop you putting up your own 'ad thread' Mr SteadyGo, if that's how you really see it. If it's as interesting as this thread I'll happily take a gander at it without feeling I'm being advertised to. Perhaps you could call it 'Unusual job on MY bench today'.

You're referring to the foil ablation test - look, I'm sure the Op doesn't want this to be become a technical debate on ultrasonic cleaners. They work on a process of cavitation- and in the same way cavitation happens on a boat propeller and will create a pitted surface away over a VERY long time, you don't have much to worry about using it for jewellery provided you just follow the instructions. They do agitate stones and if they are loose it can reveal a problem, but really the problems would have showed up anyway just a bit further down the line.

Anyway, back to the topic. wink
I didn't misread it - just didn't agree with it.

Sorry if I was getting in the way of your adverts smile
Eddie is probably too polite to tell you to fk off and leave probably the best thread on PH alone. I'm not.

Opinions are subjective and lead to endless debate.
This thread is not for that.

If, as many do, you see an internet forum as an online pub, there is a traditional way of solving such situations.
My money is on the marine.

Uh-oh, here comes a hardman! Take cover everyone. He's not polite.

Are you seriously suggesting a fight to decide whose opinion on ultrasound cleaners is correct? You absolute tool.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahagahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Love the support. Very warming, thank you.

Im not too polite, trust me. Time and a place etc. The thing with this trade is that it is terribly incestuous and good news / bad news spreads fast. Faster than you could imagine / want in some cases. It's always best to say little or nothing in such a small community.

Eddie (not this Eddie though lol) is most likely a decent guy. Maybe he doesn't like that I've got a regular slot on here, and that it has earned me a few beer tokens along the way. That's a nice side effect, but it was never the aim. I hold no grudge.

I post up here because it appears to interest you all, and because there's nowhere else that has such a thread outside of a dedicated forum. I hope to keep posting here for as long as is appropriate or accepted. ...... Or until 10pm when I win the euromillions and leave the shop door open for people to help themselves.

Keep looking in guys and thanks again.

I'm left scratching my head with the last few points. I make a factual contribution in a public forum (albeit with a slightly tongue in cheek remark) and there are posts like I have insulted your family.

As you know from posts exchanged before, our business interests are in completely different sections of the jewellery industry, so there is no overlap that I am aware of. If you are making money and doing well, I'm genuinely happy for you smile

For the record, this is one of items my company made for a member of an overseas Royal Family smile

A customer is getting married next month and needs some necklaces for the bridesmaids and her mum. Her gran gave her a 9ct yellow gold bracelet before she died and to make the necklaces special wants to use the gold to produce the centre pieces.

1 x 9ct bracelet:

I lost a pic somewhere, but to explain: I chopped out about a dozen links and melted them down. The lump was then rolled to make a 1.25mm thick x 6.5mm wide plate. The plate is then punched to make 12 x 6.5mm round discs. I wanted 2.5mm thick discs but my feeble little arms cant strike the punch hard enough to cleanly slice through 2mm plate. Not without smashing my fingers anyway. More on that in a bit.

Here is the end of the plate and a punched disc:

A few more discs:

Once the discs are all punched i then have to work out how to make 2.5mm thick discs. Simple solution is to solder them together. Look! Magic!

Clearly they don't resemble anything like nice neat discs as you'd imagine on a bridal necklace. So, now to figure out a way to turn them into lovely round 6mm x 2.5mm discs.

Firstly I take 1 x drill bit. That is ground down to give a flat end.

You can see where I'm going with this: The centre point of the disc is found and the disc is glued to the end of the drill bit:

The drill is used to spin the disc and using different grades of emery paper we skim down the profile to match the requirements:

With all the discs spun to the right dimensions I groove around the middle to give a little pattern and to hide any obvious solder joints:

Each necklace (bridesmaid and mother) has 3 gold discs soldered together to make a central focal point. I solder 3 discs together and then the other 3:

Next week I'll add the chains (0.8mm spiga) and then make a single silver version for the bride. Hopefully they'll turn out nice smile

Eddie

Of course I'm not.
I was being ridiculous.
I thought that was obvious.
How could they have a fight over the internet. Honestly....

Absolutely my company made it. And I hand picked all 90 carats of diamonds myself, including the main diamond, a 27 carat beauty.
