Don't worry about it – some people seem to operate on the basis of if you can't be sycophantic you're better off not voicing your honest opinion, or if you must, it's only to be done in an extremely genteel manner, so as not to possibly offend the owner.

As for the owner, Yeti is a damn sight more thick skinned than to be even slightly miffed at your view – he already knows mine, and if he was the approval type, he'd have bought the ALS I recommended instead, in his thread.

however if someone loves their possession (and clearly they do in places like this, they post in pride) then maybe acknowledging their humanity might not be such a bad thing. They might (if indeed they aren't lucky enough to be so thick skinned) have their feelings a bit hurt but someone just blurting out if they think it's st. Even if not, you don't actually have to tell them. It doesn't actually achieve anything (unless you're endeavouring to engage in the very British pursuit of bring someone down a peg or two), and it isn't sycophantic, just polite. As you've misintepreted what i've said as you have to say you like it when you don't - that's completely wrong. If you really do think there's nothing wrong with such brutal, unnecessary honesty and also you don't even understand that you had the ability to withold your opinion, i am left wondering whether you might be sitting, undiagnosed, right on that spectrum.

TBH probably the minority of watches posted on the watch forum are watches i am not keen on, but i choose not to just write "YOUR WATCH IS UGLY" each and every time. Discussing something that someone isn't emotionally invested in yes, that's fine, no issue there. However manners is what keeps us from allowing the Internet (and life, ultimately) to turn us into complete s. How would you like it if you showed someone a picture of your wife and kids down the pub (not sure whether this is realistic or not), and for them to just look you in the eye and say "YOUR WIFE US UGLY AND YOUR KIDS ARE FAT" and then just walk off?

Oh FFS get a grip. He said he didn't like it, he didn't say it was st, ugly or anything else.

To be absolutely honest, my guess is that his slight bluntness might have been a knee-jerk reaction to the tone of yeti's post, which had a whiff of pretension about it.

Can someone post up an interesting watch to move this on?

It's not a blame culture, its just an area of development. Mind you if it was a present from the individual who does your ironing then it's a classic mis- direction.

My wife is pretty st when it comes to ironing double cuffs but then I've learnt its better to have st looking cuffs than pass comment.

When the dry cleaner starts buying me presents I'll start doing my own ironing! :-)

Looking for some opinions. Due to receive some inheritance and looking to spend up to 5k.

I LOVE this but haven't heard much about the brand for the price they are going for.

Also like this, are IWC worth the strong prices they command?

I am far from an expert but as far as I am aware the Nomos has an in-house movement whereas the IWC has a bought in and modified ETA movement. Is that important? It depends upon your viewpoint.

Personally I like a watch to be totally in-house. The flip side is that watches with ETA movements tend to be very reliable. Which to some people is the most important factor.

The other problem with IWC is that there is a limited quantity of substance and a huge dollop of marketing. Their boss Georges Kern stood up and gave a talk on this very subject. His attempt to supplant Gerald Ratner in the doofus hall of shame, for any thinking person, might put paid to IWC as a sensible buying choice.

So in summary, if you like the Nomos buy it. It's the better value and more intelligent choice, it just has a less well known maker's name.

I sit here at my desk having recently made an impulse purchase of the Pelagos. I have tried to work out how to change the strap to the rubber verison but failed miserably. A trip to the deal is necessary as it looks great! Nice one fella!

In reference to the 'epistolary war of attrition' which unveiled itself earlier, Unfussy watches are my preference; they do what is required of a watch and many are a thing of beauty. I count the Pelagos amongst those watches, along with the original Breitling Superocean Heritage (mesh strap), of which I am also a lucky owner. Whatever others feel about fussy or unfussy watches is not of concern to me. It's all a matter of personal taste. I have a Dornbluth on order and still have over 7 months to wait but I know that it'll be special, will have been hand-made with a fine attention to detail, to my spec and will be passed on to future generations of my family (lucky son!). Some chronographs are palatable but not those with diamonds here and barometric pressure gauges there; they are just not my bag. Having said that, they are the preference of others and if they weren't then none would sell and the watchmakers would not make them. Chaq'un a son gout!

Smart watch.

I noticed a new Tudor display in Goldsmiths recently. Some smart looking watches and when I look at some of the dross from other manufacturers in the same window I cannot help but feel Tudor will do well in the UK.

Friday, or as us poor contractors say when all the staff guys are on their bi-weekly flex day, 'Friday Film Day'

Today I think is going to be Star Wars Episodes 1 to 3. Should be able to fit them all in if I start now.
