Hi all

Looking to get myself my first "keeper" watch. Looking at a budget of £3500 ish. Happy to get a used piece.

I always promised myself a Rolex Submariner but think i may struggle at this budget to get a good used one with papers etc. Like the Planet ocean too which is a touch cheaper.

Any suggestions please?

Matt

Up the budget ever so slightly if you need to and get the Submariner - it's what you really want. It's the ubiquitous default choice for a reason. Because it's brilliant.

Question is whether date or non-date version now!

Should get a nice 14060 non-date with papers etc for that I'd have thought!

However... I'd maybe up the budget about a grand and get a 16600 SD... You won't be disappointed!

IT's the best of the bunch. I reckon 4200 might get you a good one. That's a watch for life yes

Rolex Explorer?

£3500 will get you a new one in duty free or ~£3700 will bag one from Blowers/Iconic.

any of the above suggestions...

if you have a Rolex in mind you'll hanker after one if you get something else and it will end up costing you more in the long run.

may seem a bit obvious but they are nice watches and desirable; others might say that it's too obvious but you can always shift one on easily if you get bored of it.

If you can try to save up a bit more and wait a bit more and get the Rolex, you'll be glad.

The alternative is buying the Omega and then getting desperate to get the Rolex.

At that point, you will regret not taking this advice. I've been there too wink

What about Breitling? For £3100 you can get the new Aerospace Evo:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=breitling+aerosp...

or if you look for one secondhand a Breitling Blackbird: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=breitling+blackb...

My favourite is the DLC version which is about £7300 new and £3500 if you hunt around.

An advantage with it is being able to swap the bezels to all black or Coke (Red/black) too.

And how much will that be worth a week later? I'll give you clue... I paid 1600 for mine. I love it, but even 1600 is rich for a quartz smile

OP didn't specify but I think we all assumed mechanical rather than quartz, perhaps wrongly.

Ah, I see the Rolex snobs are out in full force. I have a Submariner too, a Pro Hunter.....

Frankly, Rolex a bit of an obvious choice so I suggested something different, (the OP did seem to want ideas). Interestingly, my Breitlings have appreciated in value, but then my oldest Aerospace is 14 years old.

Sure, if you want to look like every other ever high end car dealer out there then buy a Rolex. It will keep its value and might even appreciate, (dependent on which model and serial number you buy). However, for your budget I would consider other makes. The best I can think of under £3k is Breitling and while the Rolex fanboys will tell you they are not very good, I think they are wrong. If it was my money I would buy second hand as they tend to hold their value around the half retail price mark.

Again, not everyone likes quartz and a quartz watch is generally inferior (in quality and definitely workmanship), to an in-house automatic movement like Rolex. Its one advantage is size and weight, but again it won't hold its value like a well made automatic.

Anyway just my thoughts, for what its worth...

Good luck with your purchase.

I love my Breitling B-1, but I'd balk at 3 grand for a quartz watch, tbh, however nice it is.

But equally, I wouldn't ever pay 12 grand for a stainless steel watch by any maker, so you pay your money and make your choice.

I'd tend to go with the Sub choice in this case, though - If that's what you want, sometime soon anything else will be a disappointment... Same as if I'd bought a Sub in preference to my Cosmonaute smile

Wait and save a bit longer...

M.

Probably slightly less after that outburst.

You posted a quartz Breitling and one with an ETA movement. Had you posted a watch with a BR-01 movement then that's an interesting watch. You posted two ordinary ones IMHO not as worthy of consideration; I have owned both BTW and still have an Avantage along with half a dozen other Breitlings so am not a brand hater by any means.

But if someone asks for one watch, a keeper; they say they want a Sub and they have the budget for a Sub - suggesting they get a Sub does make the posters snobs or fanboys. Nor does it make the OP look like a car dealer if he chooses to get one.

Yeti, I'll take the hit that my remarks are probably a little unreasonable but my suggestions are valid and while I accept the watch gurus might not approve, they are both nice watches. How many people know what a BR-01 movement is? But, I do take your point, I just don't agree with it. Does he have a budget for a Sub?

And just as an aside, I look at/buy a lot of cars and nearly every dealer I have spoken to this year is wearing a Rolex. So make of that what you will, but if I can't joke about it on here then where can I?

i read it slightly different in that the OP wanted a Sub, but really wanted to spend less. the general responses were that you should go with your first instinct and hold out for the Sub, or something similar.

hardly the case that people here are Rolex snobs, as there are lots of other watches supported here, i've 2 breitlings myself but tend to prefer the Navitimer style to the modern incarnations.

it may well be that the OP goes for a Breitling or similar, but as you probably know if the Rolex itch is there you'll need to scratch it at some point; why make costly mistakes on the way. we've all done it and i now have 5 to shift to get what i should have streched for in the first place!

a SS Sub isn't very car dealer anyway; that a gold DJ shirley?

Heh. If that's true, then it's very hard to argue with laugh

However, a lot of engineers, physicists and geologists wear them at my place and in the wider world; yachtsmen, policemen, car racers, city suit wearers, or in fact anyone who wants to sensibly spend 4k on a watch! Considering so many are sold annually, it's quite hard to stereotype the owners...

All your points taken onboard and you're right; we have our opinions and the world would be a duller place if we all agreed! smile
