They used to be friends on an Audi TT forum.
Ohh. I thought there was some obscure reference to something I'd posted.

Mm. I kinda agree and disagree. It's a waste of money, sure. But then as someone says, anything more than £10 on a device to tell the time is a waste (besides we have mobile phones so...).
Regardless of what people spend their money on, someone will invariably say its a waste of money. If someone gets pleasure and enjoyment in owning an expensive watch then the money has not been wasted.
Indeed. wink

Seems a bit lacking in reality to say that a Seamaster is fine (a bloody expensive watch to most non-watch people) but something for £20k is a waste.

My dad would be equally as shocked by the price of the Omega and probably wouldn't believe you can spend £20k on one.

just more terrible journalism, a justification article for their monthly pay check.

My dad didn't realise you can spend more that £10 on a wallet.

No but he used to pic them up in the markets in spain. I say them he use to get 5 for £10. That tells you a lot about the workman ship if you have to buy them in bulk.

The only surprise was that it was in the telegraph and not the guardian, although for them it might have been a serious piece! The guy is just spouting a load of ste to fill a few editorial inches on a quiet day. Could have written the same article and substitute watches for cars/shoes/house/suits/golf club fees (why go to Wentworth when you can use the council pitch and putt, how excessive!)
But he made the specific point that cars are different because there is a tangible difference between driving an F Type Jaguar and driving a cheaper car, and this also applies to using houses and golf clubs and to a lesser extent shoes and suits. Whether it's sufficient to justify the price difference is obviously another matter.
yep, i agree. the F Type would be bloody uncomfortable and far too quick; you'd never get a weeks shop in it and as for that trip to IKEA, forget it. as for fuel consumption, might as well set fire to five pound notes. easy as that, all bullst journalism.

Can't be bothered to read it even. Clearly a £50 quartz keep perfectly good time. Clearly M&S shoes are perfectly ok for walking in and a Mondeo is a fine car for getting around in. Clearly ladies don't desire diamonds because a piece of costume jewellery looks just as good. Clearly the journalist was asked to knock-up a controversial piece as a space filler in 10-15 mins.

I haven't read it either (I will later hopefully) but it smacks of that ^^

I never justify my watches to anyone. There is no point.

However, they do hold money better than cars, boats, other jewellery, clothes or any other luxury good. I think I sold 15 or so watches last year, I made money (probably not much if inflation is taken into account admittedly on some of them) on all but one; a Zenith I bought new and sold quickly.

That's not bad for a hobby and it gives me a hell of a lot of pleasure.

EDITED at 16:24 to add... I see the Telegraph have in the last few hours changed the title of the article from "Men who buy expensive watches are stupid" to "Why I've never understood the appeal of a posh watch".

Naughty naughty read

yes quite.

I bought a rather lovely watch on the day I sold my company - my son will own it one day, and maybe his son after him.

Whilst a £10 quartz will do the job, it rather misses the point - it's art that you can wear and appreciate.

The mere fact that the retort is in the 'fashion and style' section really proves the original point.

Got to say I agree with him on the Omega point. But if I was awash with cash I would more than likely buy a special piece say £20 K.

OK im probably going to be killed to death for this post but here goes. I switched from real cigs to electronic cigs a while back.

These things work perfectly well

However I found a guy who makes battery mods from scratch, he mills the tube from brass, adds your choice of wood and basically provides a hand made product that you can not find anywhere else on the planet. Its £100 I bought one, I like the fact one guy made it to my order, the workmanship is astounding, yes it vapes well, could I have found a cheaper product that does the same thing maybe. But I have something totally unique that no one else has.

I can see how people into watches would go that extra step for something special, unique or rare.

This is my e-cig

You say that but add some precious metals and a few diamonds???

I have dealt with a couple of claims for mobile phones. £15,000 a pop, this is a phone, you make and receive call on it. People buy these things.

I can see someone making a solid gold version, Gold conducts electricity very well. The button to activate it can quite easily take a 10ct diamond (USD100,000+) You don't think there are people in this world that would not purchase one?
