And everything you spout seems to be an attempt to impress people with your boasting.

Why are you so obsessed with "Getting a return" on gaming? It's not an investment FFS, it's entertainment. A cheap form of entertainment when compared to most other hobbies, that's why it's enjoyed by hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

To label yourself 'stupid' would be a harsh. I can think of plenty of other labels though.
I give up. When people try and give examples you call it boasting rather than understanding it's an example to your question. You don't give examples of your own (I hope your car doesn't cost more than £500 as that just becomes a symbol of status and showing off your money since a £500 car could do the same...).

Some people are like you say, show-offs and have a different view on what is "cheap". However you project your views onto others and so become self-centred, as anyone who doesn't prioritize spending their money on what is ok by your standards is a rich prick who is showing off. Therefore you become just as unpleasant (as seen by the reaction of a lot of people on multiple threads).

I really enjoyed the Alex Proud article. And I'm 100% with him. But there a lots of things in popular culture that I just can't get my head around, and ludicrously expensive watches aren't even top of my list.

Not sure what is, probably personalised number plates. Because there's an item which, in my opinion, does nothing to enhance the status of the owner but in fact lowers it. The ultimate emperors new clothes.

If I saw a Ferrari with the owners name in a strip across the top of the windscreen, I'd shake my head in despare. So I see no reason to act differently when the name is on a plastic strip a few feet lower. The fact that the moron has paid £20K for the privilege when he could have got a strip across his windscreen for a tenner makes it even more laughable.

This madness is now so prolific that I actually think it's really cool to see a really expensive car with a normal number plate. Just like there is nothing cooler than meeting someone you know is fabulously wealthy, and they are wearing a Casio watch.

Just my take on it. If someone wants to spend thousands of pounds on a number plate or a watch, it's no skin off my nose. I just think, like the article said, they lack imagination. Sheeple I think is the current term.

I think you are missing the point, a watch is for telling the time, over a certain price you do not get a more accurate time piece, from that point it becomes Jewellery, if people are prepared to pay for it that is their decision.
And this is from somebody who always promised himself a Rolex when he could afford ithehe

Maybe we should have a thread on women's high-end spending habits.

My gf just SMSd me to say she's spent a 100k on an ornamental wooden screen for the lounge .

eek

I hope it's been checked for termites...

Upside is she will not be vetoing any future watch, sports gear or car purchases biggrin

I would bet money that people who pay thousands for private plates also claim that they are not showing off and bought it because "it's an investment".

It's a very similar mentality to those who spend thousands on a watch, whether they realise it or not.

It would be interesting to hear the opinions of people who own a private plate (but not a £5000 watch) and vice versa ?

Why one, but not the other ?

I don't think i asked a question, but a statement about owning a xxxxx projector/surround sound system was given regardless.

I don't recall anyone asking the question "What does your gaming room look like?"

I know what Gloating looks like, and i see plenty of Gloating in this thread, in several different forms.

Wow - you must be quite excited about what lies ahead. If you're hoping to earn £31k in 5 years time and £36k 10 years from now, you're going to be having a ball!! Not sure you'll be cash rich either, unless viewed through the eyes of a Big Issue seller.
Wow. Do you realise how pathetic you sound with your shameless gloating? That's an above average salary, you know?

You must be a desparately unhappy and insecure man if spouting this type of bile makes you feel smug or superior to the majority of the UK population.

Horrid little man.

Taking h22s socialist stance, pussy is pussy. So he'd be equally happy knobbing Jo Brand instead of Anne Hathaway?

No, me either.

I wasn't gloating, I was merely pointing out how low your level of ambition is. This in itself explains a lot of the ridiculous positions you have taken in this debate and why you fail to understand someone blowing cash on something that costs double your annual pay packet yet doesn't dent their bank balance significantly.

Must I be desperately unhappy and insecure to point out your lack of ambition and state the above?

I think I'd be unhappy and insecure in your position but I'm doing absolutely fine, thank you!
