It looks like the writing of a very normal person that isn't obsessed with acquiring status symbols to me.
If you have the world view of someone who wants an obviously expensive watch to impress others but they are unimpressed or worse, think you're a bit of a dick, you can only really rationalise it by imagining they're jealous of you.I know it's a hard concept for some people to accept but not everyone thinks buying expensive stuff to impress others makes them "a success in life".

Exactly the same as a 20k watch.
The article in the OP is discussing watches costing six figures (GBP). That's the price of a house (a st one) and many times the average claims admin's salary.
Cotty's absurd custom Vape costs the same as twenty packs of fags. (Guessing at that cost as I don't smoke, fake or properly)

So now add some diamonds and precious metals, make sence now? I could add some diamonds and precious metal to my KFC and it would have nothing to do with expensive watches and it would ruin the food.

Of course they are.
By which I mean I can't afford one.
When I can different story.
I see your point, but the same doesn't apply to houses though. Have you ever heard anyone say this :By which I mean I can't afford one.
When I can different story.
"I hate you because you own a house. That's a waste of money. Houses are horrible and people that own them are show-offs."
Owning a nice house and fairly nice car are aspirational.
Owning an expensive watch, Mr T gold chain, lot of jewellery, £500 cufflinks etc. (insert status symbol here...) are something very different indeed.

What's any of that got to do with your £100 fake cigarette?
If you don't understand I don't have the time to explain it to you. Good day.For crying out loud do we have to have friction is this part of the forum?
People are always customising cheap everyday items to bling them up & make them more personal, in much the same way that someone will by a diamond encrusted Rolex to show off they are richer than someone with a basic Rolex. Taste has nothing to do with it.

Nope I don't get that. Owning an expensive watch <etc.> something very different indeed.
The journalist also seems to be unable to grasp that fact; that some people collect or buy watches because they are beautiful pieces of fascinating engineering which actually hold their money nicely and give pleasure. His sterotype was that 'all men who buy expensive watches are stupid'. He is wrong.

It doesn't look like he's saying that successful people are stupid at all. It looks like he's saying that successful people who buy £10000 watches are stupid.
You could certainly accuse people of being philistines for not liking "Art", that's probably a fair criticism actually, but accusing them of envy is haughty.
My point is that the desire to own an expensive watch is not a natural aspiration in the same way that wanting to own a house is.You could certainly accuse people of being philistines for not liking "Art", that's probably a fair criticism actually, but accusing them of envy is haughty.
Owning a house is necessary for security. Both personal and financial.

I like your custome e-ciggy though, it looks like a stink bomb from when I was small.

And the point that I responded to was that you said "nice house and "nice car". I fail to see why having aspirations to own a nice house and nice car is any different to having aspirations to own a nice watch. Ipso facto, they are all aspirational. H22observer said:

Alex Proud is a bloke who sells photographic prints of film stars (NB not the negative) for £1,900 and thinks it's stupid to spend a lot on a watch.:BANGSHEAD:
