As above really, will be getting engaged to the other half at some point very soon and I mentioned that if i was spending 3 months wages on a ring. The least she could do is buy a watch of my choice? (albeit much less than the ring).

Some people agree and some people think im well, i kNoB!!

Whats your views guys, should this be made rule for blokes or just fobbed off as a joke??

I think they are a popular alternative to a ring.

Yep - a watch is a perfectly acceptable engagement token for a bloke.

I didn't realise men were supposed to get an engagement 'thing'...is that new?

I thought we just bought the ring for the girl and that was that.

I think the expectation of something in return misses the point and lacks chivalry tbh.

Each to their own though, I don't stand in judgement on the issue.

I posted a similar thread on here last year, well, watch instead of a wedding ring.

I ended up with both in the end, but there's nothing wrong with it. I didn't expect the missus to bug it though, I'd still be waiting now if I had, and I'd be paying for it anyway...

I've asked in a few shops since out of curiosity, and it seems it's an increasingly popular thing to do.

Why not just swap envelopes with cash so you can pick your own items.... wink

If you're expecting anything you're expecting too much

At the end of the day, your money will be pooled together when you get married anyhow.

So, you will be effectively buying a watch for yourself (in part, depending on your earnings ratio to your future wife)

If you want one and can both afford one, buy one. Don't demand one however.

If the OH and I had the spare cash, I'd have got something for myself. However, the impending wedding soon focuses your financial attention I can assure you....

Yes see, this is exactly what I mean. I'm not expecting the lady to go all out and blow a huge amount but i think it's a good alternative to a ring.

In terms of expecting it, i do believe that is wrong an un-chivalrous.

Would you be wearing an engagement ring if not a watch?

Well to be fair this thread kinda makes me look like an arse. (My fault of course) But the whole point is it would be nice to exchange something before marriage. However, as people have raised:
1: This makes me look like an idiot that's "expecting" something
2: It would be a good alternative to a ring but do men get engagement rings?
3: Combined monies would/should go towards the wedding.

I think the morale is, save up for your own Christopher ward frown

If that's what she's insisting on, run.
