Agree. Who comes up with these "rules" ? is this more BS imported from american reality tv or a suggestion from the H Samuel marketing dept?

3 months salary must be an entire year worth of running costs for a car. Insurance, fuel, road tax, servicing, MOT, depreciation.

No chance. 3 weeks salary. Tops.

I don't think the tradition for male wedding rings came from the states. They really took off around the time of WW2 for obvious reasons.
Didn't know that, thanks!
I just copied my Dad. He had a wedding ring, so that's what you do.

Wait till the divorce it won't just cost you a ring but will leave you glad you still own your ringpiece.

OOOOO darling that watch (C Ward LTD edition - http://www.christopherward.co.uk/le/c60-cosc-sks.h... is really nice, I may have to buy it myself wink. Wouldn't it be nice if i didn't have to buy it myself and prolong the wedding fund....... (Just to be on top of all the haters - not an expected request)

I.E quite difficult in action

Oh.
Seems like most blokes just buy it and say it's an engagement present. Their partners unsurprisingly don't say much about it because they are too embarrassed/shocked/speechless. hehe

Remember its 3 months gross salary as well...

Fortunately my wife thought she would feel comfortable from a security perspective with a 3 months of ring on her flipper as it would be a pretty huge rock.

So we just went vintage.

If she doesn't raise the subject of buying you an engagement present then don't raise it with her.

And for God's sake man take her to Paris!!! wink

I got the Square root of f*** all.... and I imagine most others do to.

Do you really need a gift? An engagement ring is symbolic, its not a gift/present as such.

It's one month not 3! Which mumsnet forum told you it was 3? It's always been one month.

We bought each other a gift for the wedding day she got a diamond necklace and I got a watch which was about a third of the price.
