Deeply disappointed
Discussion
Only thing I see similar is the markers depicting the locations of the hours.
Have you looked at the rest of a corum romvlvs 396.701.20 compared to a field engineer?
If you had you would see its usually like this:
Roman numerals is an option people asked for, so he gave people that option.

Have to say that comparing watches, with what seems a negative slant, is daft. So many watches have similarities, some are blatant copies, but "Get away with it" because they then put their own brand name on them.
Think of all the Rolex hommages out there.
Do these 2 look similar ? Quite obviously
Is that a bad thing ? Not in the slightest.
Does it matter ? Your choice

Wrong way round, the Roman numerals came first IIRC, the tachy bezel later. The relief on the dial with the cut-outs around the hour batons are very similar; having never seen the Corum before, I thought that was one of the Offshore's nicest features. I still do.
Very, very few watches look completely different to all other watches. They share a few features sure, so do the Planet Ocean and Submariner, Fifty fathoms and all A.N Other dive watches.
I'd be staggered if Lorne had used a Corum as his basis for design

Why is this a problem, yet Steinhart's almost blatant copying of Rolex designs is seen as a nice homage?
Devil's advocate. Steinhart make Rolex homages. Lorne does not make Corum Romulus homage we assume.Du1point8 said:
PJS seems to think its a direct copy of the watch he posted above.
Also saying it in a few threads directed straight at the fact in his opinion its a copy.
Can I ask which threads? Also saying it in a few threads directed straight at the fact in his opinion its a copy.

OP try putting some text in the OP to explain what the fk you are on about...
that would be very usefulWhats incoming thread.

Fabulous. Mine will be in the post tomorrow back to Lorne for the free up-grade. I love this watch. Despite all the others I own (some several times the value of the Offshore) its still watch I seem to end up wearing nearly everyday.
If Carlsberg made watches........
Is Carlberg's beer not their own work these days?If Carlsberg made watches........

Thanks - he clearly has an issue for some reason. When someone said that they couldn't wait for their field engineer (see below for the quote)

This. There are few genuinely unique things created anymore be it phones, music, books, watches, etc. They nearly all borrow a bit from somewhere else.I have made no secret that I really like my Offshore (and it sits alongside my other watches like Rolex and a Heuer Monaco)
Yes the watches are similar but would I have purchased the Corum? Probably not. Although similar it just does not appeal in the same way. Obviously it will to others.
There is also part of me that likes the "man in the shed" approach.
I don't know if PJS is "deeply disappointed" as he has purchased an Offshore or maybe he is just deeply disappointed with life.

I don't think there are that many similarities. Bar the obvious hour markers, inner bezel and outer bezel (which not all Offshores have!) they are completely different.
The case, hands, sub-dials, branding, crown, pushers are all different.
Has anyone else noticed how the OP has gone quiet now everyone has disagreed with him? Obviously hunting for some controversy which has backfired.
Not quiet, just on another forum.
Not disappointed with having purchased one – since I haven't – and I'll not dignify the other 'disappointed with…' remark.
Bottom line, I was under the distinct impression Lorne designed this all himself, and have said in the past how I'd like one.
Turns out he's copied Corum's Romvlvs dial almost completely, and the bezel.
Only due to the movement chosen for use, was he forced to re-arrange the layout and date window position, which was also kept round.
If none of you see a problem with Lorne's passing his off as all his own work, then that's your prerogative, but I find it very disappointing to have realised its look has already been done before, and because it was a relatively unknown and unseen model, so chosen as a safe one to use.

Aside from the plate thingys each side of the hour markers, I fail to see any similarity in the watches. Lorne's brother wears an old Bvlgari with a roman numeral bezel ….. I assumed this was where that inspiration came from. I have a Field Engineer and love it, would never have bought the Corum.
Really can't see the problem here. Virtually every feature on both of those watches is derivative of something:
Round dial? Derivative of probably 75% of watches out there.
3 central hands? Derivaive of maybe 80% of gents' watches.
Small chrono dials? Clearly derivative of every chrono to date.
Side pushers spanning the crown for chrono functions? Hardly original!
Roman numerals on bezel? I have '80s and '90s quartz junk that used that - did Corum copy them?
"Negative" cut-plate hour markers? Seen them on car clocks back to at least the early 60s - it's an easy manufacturing technique. In fact, we made a wall clock using it back in design technology at school - has Corum ripped off our DT teacher???
There are very, very few genuinely novel treatments to give a watch dial, and the few recent attempts to create genuinely "new" concepts (binary displays etc) have, frankly, been impractical movelties.
