Nice watch, looked older then 1979. Its probably worth the best part of £1k
It may be I'm going of the engraving of 1971 when he was given it. It only ever got used for wedding etc so was always stored away.

Is there anyway of finding out or can a watch person tell when they look at it? As we have some very good local repairs shops where my FIL. Takes his watch for service etc

Look between the lugs. Between one set will be the Rolex design/model number and between the other the serial number. This will date the watch to within a year or so.

Keep away from watch repair shops, on the whole. You cannot dismiss them all of course and there is one fellow here (Joe) who has something similar and I would give any of my watches to him without reservation, but he is the exception rather than the rule, in my experience.

It does look older than you thought to me. Even a 6426 Precision (which would have Oyster under the Rolex namestyle and crown) looks more modern.

I've looked and can not find a number anywhere on it. The book says its case 32961 which puts it 1930-1935? Think I'll get it looked at over the weekend to see the date on the back case

Does this sound about right as reading up it's the later models have it on the outside.

I suspect that it dates from around 1960 and that Mappin & Webb made were mistaken with regards to the model number.

Im not sure enough to state the model number, but I am reasonably confident that I am close.

Is it solid gold or gold filled/capped?

Do you have pictures of the case inside and caseback inner? I suspect that you are quoting the movement number.

As I am not trying to look clever (unusual for PH...) I will tell you which model I think that it is, as this may help you and Im not sure when I will next look at this: 3365.

I know OP wants to keep this watch to pass on to family - anyone know how much a 1979 watch would cost to buy?

I have a 1978/9 Oysterdate Precision (6694, which is far, far newer than the OPs watch), and it cost me £600. You could easily pay twice as much for a less impressive e watch which had had the Oyster bracelet sold off separately, though. Move a little upmarket and you will be able to find a nice Date or Datejust with provenance for £1,200.

With regards to the 'post elsewhere and youll get better information' comment: I think that the OP has done quite well already considering the amount of information supplied and the quality of the images posted. I appear to have managed more than M&W did and they had it in pieces.

With the original box and papers and other provenance it will be worth a good deal more than £1,000.

Thanks for the vote of confidence smile

To be fair, there are plenty of good independents out there. The problem is that it's really not hard to do the basics - practically anyone can buy a few tools, batteries and a cheap ultrasound unit and call themselves a watch repairer - especially wih a professional looking website to draw people in!

So a little update

The watch its self is a late 1950's Rolex precision dress watch 35mm in 9ct gold.

in the end i stayed clear of Rolex and went to Stephen Hales in london who intern referred me to Robert Taylerman who opened up the watch. Only a few will do this as the case will not come off here is some pictures of the watch after Robert opened it up

So the next steps for me is to have it serviced at Roberts and will try and wear it when ever i can.

being Ph too the value is £3-4000 maybe 5k in a watch auction

Nice but sounds a bit much, I bought a 1956 rolex that looks a lot like that in 2006 for around 800.

Im struggling with the value too. Not that it matters to the OP.
