That might make for an "interesting" conversation at UK customs, if your "courier" gets stopped!

Any gift worth more than £390 you have to pay duty on.

So if said person were to buy a rolex from the airport AS and bring it back to the UK, would they then pay duty?

You should declare that you're importing goods of that value and pay VAT I believe if the watch is worth more than £390 which it is.

I know nobody does but it exceeds your duty free allowance by some margin

It was a consideration when I bought my watch, in the end the difference between DXB price and AD price here in the UK was minimal and I didn't consider it worthwhile taking the risk

its called smuggling .............. if you don't declare it and get caught they can confiscate the property and/ or charge you the tax + a fine equal to the tax

I've bought several watches from the states and had no idea there would be a tax liability on return, never been questioned about it. Actually, we got stopped returning from JFK and had an iPad which they were interested in seeing the receipt for, asking nothing about the Jeager Le-Coultre box next to it.

As well as the VAT/ Import Duty issue, I'm just imagining the huge hole you could dig for yourself trying to explain how you acquired said "gift"............

These guys are masters at smelling a lie, so you'd need a cracking cover story if you wanted to avoid the "ah so, you picked this up abroad from a total stranger, with a view to passing in on to a relatively total stranger when you returned to the UK, but you have no idea where it came from, sir?" line of questioning.

^^^ not what i was looking for!

I was wondering if anybody would be happy to pick me up a watch from the duty free lounge at DXB on thier way back to the UK?

Does everybody / anybody pay duty on a new Rolex theyve bought in a duty free departures lounge? Never been asked to pay fees when bringing a duty free purchase home.

very much doubt anybody pays duty on return with goods. ive bought countless things overseas and never even seen somebody from customs at the green gate, let alone spoken to one of them!

That being said, im not sure id do it for someone else lol. Ive usually stuck the ipad/watch/whatever on my person and stuck the box in the hold. If your properly concerned you could put the watch on and post the empty box back to yourself.

If you really do stand a chance of being stung for import duty on a Rolex or other expensive item which can be bought in the duty free / international departure lounge then why do they bother selling them? Surely you'd just be given the item in one of the airport plastic bags, with a reciept a proof, and then it'd just be carried through as hand luggage. If at the other end i got asked for taxes or charges i'd be questioning what the point was of having such outlets at the airport in the first place. I can understand paying fees if youve bought the item in town for a bargain and were bringing it through the airport check in etc, but not if youre buying from the departure lounge. No point buying otherwise. Loads of you have bought at LHR etc, did you worry about being stung for duties then?

Within the EU you are fine.

But it's undoubtedly true that you should declare anything over the limit if bought outside of the EU.

That's a rather naive comment.......asking somebody to bring in goods from outside the EU is asking them to smuggle and in theory, is punishable with prison and a criminal record .

You're assuming there is anyone to report it to ?

Newcastle airport , where I fly into a reasonable amount seems to be devoid of anyone after passport control at times .

The obvious point of having duty free sales of luxury goods is for non EU residents.

If I buy a Rolex at LHR I avoid 20%VAT. When in bring it into Singapore I pay 7% GST.

( still doesn't necessarily make it a cheaper option - but that's how it works..)
