You're assuming there is anyone to report it to ?

Newcastle airport , where I fly into a reasonable amount seems to be devoid of anyone after passport control at times .
that is not the point. There is always a telephone available at any airport to declare goods being bought into the country. If you wish to use that facility is up to you. Customs can stop you at anytime in the future and ask you to prove when and where the watch came from. Bringing goods into the UK from outside the EU without declaring them is smuggling and is a criminal act.

"Yes, there's this chap on an Internet forum, I've picked it up for him".

Bonkers, no way would anyone entertain such an arrangement!

I'm passing through DXB next month but sorry I'm unable to help. In terms of tax evasion bringing a 5k rolex in is the equivalent to bringing in 150+ packs of cigarettes in terms of lost revenue to HMRC. Obviously the chances of being caught are far far less with a watch. Do I have a moral objection to it, no actually I think we're overtaxed, will I take the chance for someone else, no sorry.

If you really do stand a chance of being stung for import duty on a Rolex or other expensive item which can be bought in the duty free / international departure lounge then why do they bother selling them? Surely you'd just be given the item in one of the airport plastic bags, with a reciept a proof, and then it'd just be carried through as hand luggage. If at the other end i got asked for taxes or charges i'd be questioning what the point was of having such outlets at the airport in the first place. I can understand paying fees if youve bought the item in town for a bargain and were bringing it through the airport check in etc, but not if youre buying from the departure lounge. No point buying otherwise. Loads of you have bought at LHR etc, did you worry about being stung for duties then?
Because airport prices are not necessarily just duty free but actually lower price than the high street anyway. Perfumes etc are available to all travellers at a massive discount vs the high street. Watches are the same actually there is still a decent discount available even to inter-EU travellers.

it's an interesting point of view but one I don't agree with........everybody (almost) thinks they are overtaxed but it does not give the moral right to avoid it. Im starting to sound holier than thou ......which I am not smile

It's one of the reasons I won't but a watch from the USA because it attracts VAT on import whereas watches from Germany, Italy , Spain ect, do not .

Surely if you are paying VAT then you might as well pay it to your own country rather than Germany, Italy or Spain?

If you import from the US then you pay VAT directly to Mr Osbourne. If you import from Europe then the VAT is paid to the originating country

I wouldn't do it myself because I don't think it's worth the risk. My girlfriend used to work for a major insurer and they wouldn't insure such items without a uk VAT receipt, clearly not all insurers have that policy.

You're absolutely right though, until April when P60's are sent out...

HM Revenue & Customs have immense power, reach and punishment at their disposal. Much more than plod.

The last thing I'd do is advertise the fact on a public forum of any intended revenue evasion.

If you are in business the last thing you want to highlight to the a Revenue is that your appetite for risk includes evasion. You will be in some dry bum fun except you'll be receiving and it may not seem like it at the time. BTW please don't shoot the messenger!

Not if your buying previously owned......no Vat to pay on the purchase price ..... Full vat to pay from the USA
