Replicas big no no. Homage quite acceptable
I struggle to understand this. No different imho.
With the exception of a very few I have to agree.
And that's the very crux of the matter. There are some really good well made watches out there.

I don't say I would buy a replica, I'm just saying the replica forums are interesting reading, surprising amount of knowledge there.

As for homages, well I would love a Speedmaster but there is zero chance I will ever be able to afford one, so I bought this quartz Fossil for about £60. So I guess I AM for homages.

That's a actaully a nice watch in its own right - it looks vaguely like a Speedmaster but I wouldn't even call that a homage, just something in the style of a classic.

And I'll repeat; the reps are a styt idea perpetuated by dreamers and liars, I'll bet the knowledge isn't half what you'll find 'real' watch forum, if you want to learn.

And they aren't talked about on here.
I wouldn't call that a homage. It could be a number of black chronograph watches. It's nice wear it in good health thumbup

Had a browse on a 'rep' forum & it was 'interesting'... Why people were spending so much building collections of fake watches was beyond me?

Some proudly showing watch cases with 20+ 'reps' WTF? They could have bought one genuine watch with that amount spent, guess its easier to keep adding £150 watches to a case than actually go out & spend a few £k in one shot!

But I view fakes in the same way I view MR2's trying to be Ferrari 355's... they are st!!!

I have bought an Invicta Explorer II 'homage' though
as a beater to wear to work gym ect it makes no pretence that its anything other than it is and I'm sure not wearing the 'genuine' Explorer II that I have as a beater!!!

This to me is the exact example of the difference between 'reps' and 'homages'.

The MR2 itself is a very close homage to the 355. But all of a sudden you stick a ferrari badge on it... and it changes completely.

What about a replica AC Cobra? or a Lancia Stratos replica?

The MR2 / 355 link is more like buying a Fossil watch and sticking a Rolex sticker on it.

A completely blurred line isn't it... I wouldn't piss on a MR-2/406 rep if it was on fire, I'd have a Cobra/Stratos rep in a heartbeat.

I don't believe the lines are blurred at all in the watch world. Steinhart (for example) make a GMT watch with a blue and red bezel, 'Pepsi GMT knock-off' cries the crowd.

But it has 300m water resistance, a 42mm case and Steinhart on the dial. Put it side by side with the Rolex GMT Master and it looks no more like it than the Fossil on the previous page and a Speedmaster Pro IMHO.

Steinhart are echoes of Rolex, not copies. Homage is a phrase that doesn't really mean anything...

I don't like Steinhart for the same reason. However I find myself looking at the Steinhart Marine-Officer Bronze on a regular basis.I fancy that or a Helson who also do a "rip off" of a pro plof.

They do have some nice watches. I particuarly like the vintage sub homage that Yeti has.

I think for me I tend to get more annoyed with a brand if they rip off a watch I've owned/do own or would like to own. So with that in mind Christopher Ward and Steinhart tend to be the worst offenders in my eyes. Other brands like Parnis I don't really care about as I have no intention of owning a Panerai.
