..that will also hold its value well. Doesn't have to be new, but must have Date.

Rolex is your best bet, and you can get away with half your budget, but do you really want a watch that hundreds of thousands of other people also have?

I don't think AP RO is all that great in the value retention stakes, and similarly Vacheron Constantin Overseas, but I would take both over any Rolex, every time.
So, in answer to your query, and assuming you'd like a bit of exclusivity, then I'd say it's pretty much a Patek Philippe 5167A (Jumbo Aquanaut) or older Nautilus.
Whilst there may be little in 2mm size difference, you have to remember with the PPs, the bezel is wide, resulting in a small dial area.
Depending on wrist size and preferences, the Nautilus or both could look a bit lost and petite.

Beyond that, the only other option is to not worry about the residual value so much, buy pre-owned, and enjoy whatever you get to put on your wrist each morning.
To that end, I'd also look Glashutte Original Seventies on bracelet, their Evo Sport (which with having been discontinued could become a bit sought after years from now), and any of the Panomatics.

Could consider a 2nd hand Tudor big block Oysterdate chrono- relatively scarce ( with the Rolex case and crown)

About 3-4k GBP ... Have appreciated quite well , should hold value quite well (no longer being made / last of the old Rolex cased Tudors AFAIK)

Every day watch for someone who wears suits or jeans and jackets or more causal, heck are you a gentleman farmer or do you find yourself very much more casual most of the time ? How large a watch do you like to wear - chrono, divers, generally the more macho/ robust looking or do you like/ are you looking for a more dressy style? Stainless, precious metal, ceramic ?

£10 k creates a lot of options - new or new to you but a bit of help narrowing the search would assist unless you just want a list of people's personal favourites/the top 10 lowest depreciating watches etc etc

Thanks guys. Rolex is out of the equation as no matter how hard I try to like the Sub, it just doesn't do it for me - too many people I see wear them and I just don't find the design "special" or interesting enough.

AP and Hublot I do like both in terms of design. Agreed that the PP Nautilus looks rather small and slim line.

Anything else that I am missing.

The purchase would be used not new

When I had a similar dilemma I opted for a WG Day-Date with diamond hour markers, I did get it at a steal right enough.

Only Rolex or Patek Philippe **come close** to holding **some** money.

£10k will buy an entry-level PP Calatrava dress watch (or basic Aquanaut) but not much more than that. And not even new.
AP - yes possibly but I'm not a fan of any of their watches (apologies for offending).

If I didn't care about losing money, I'd buy a Breguet Marine at that price. Lovely watches.

This would be my suggestion too (though I'm not sure how well they hold their value).

Assuming you buy with a good discount (which is to be expected) they will not lose much at all. It's a very popular model.

Just don't pay the RRP.

Perhaps a Bremont? I wear mine everyday and their passion for being seen as a rugged watch means that it copes with the everyday knocks.

They do some interesting limited editions at your price range (I think). No idea how well they will keep their value.

I never really understand people who make the value the first condition for buying a watch.

I'd go back to what style you like, Divers, dress, chrono, gold, stainless, platinum(?) and then work from there.

I, personally, would NEVER choose a watch based primarily on value. There are a lot of watches I like that I wouldn't choose to spend as much as they are on (notably the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms) and some very cheap watches that I think are just as good (to my eye) as any multi-thousand pound watch.

Buy what you like within your budget rather than looking for something that matches your budget.

So, what is it that you LIKE in a watch (Beside a date and the absence of a Rolex logo)?

+1

You should buy a watch because you like it not because it costs 10k.
Unless you want to flash the fact you dropped 10k on a watch in which case i'd suggest S/H 18k (or bi-metal) rolex.

Whole range of watches can be had for 10k, from the iconic to the super tacky. So forget the price and nonsense talk of "investment value" and just buy what ever speaks to you.

Steel sports Rolexes are good choice for day to day, as cliche as a choice that they are, their highly polished cases can hide a multitude of sins so are good for day to day use (depending on what your day entails, but i've abused the heck out of mine and they all look decent),
Brushed Steel finishes tend to mark up more easily due to the nature of the surface. Depends on your attitude here, i personally like the lived in look, but brushed finishes can be scratch magnets (AP's get scratch just by looking at them)

I'd avoid "exotic" materials, gold marks easily, carbon/ceramics can crack, DLC/PVD coatings can get marked (and they do, my JLC is DLC coated and has mysteriously picked up two marks through the coating ), and generally getting any of these fixed/repaired is quite expensive for what would be a daily beater.

If you like dive watches, probably any othese 3 would fit the bill smile

That ^^

Used to be mine, went on honeymoon with me to Thailand; in the pool, white water rafting, elephant rides, the lot, not a mark on it. Brilliant watch, stunning bracelet and not even large by todays standards though it was considered huge when it was introduced. JLC base calibre with a Lemania Chronograph module and great lume from the big markers.

Damn, tempted to buy it back!! laugh
