Not a watch question, but this is most likely the closest group to it.

Looking to buy an engagement ring soon, someone advised me to head up to Hatton Garden to look for rings, as opposed to going to the well known high street jewelers. Supposedly more bang for your buck from the independent diamond specialists.

Does anyone have any experiences/advice/recommendations of buying engagement rings or jewelery from the shops at Hatton Garden?

Everything I have ever bought for my wife (including the engagement ring sixteen-ish years ago) has been second hand.

I prefer the colour, the designs, the sense of history and . . . you do get more for your money.

Favourite shop is Ullman's in Greville Street . . . lovely stuff.

Had one ring from there 'properly' valued (at about £5k it was a factor of ten above normal price range for us and so thought I'd better specify it on household insurance) - replacement valuation was way over what we paid.

agree with above....some jewellers have a 200-300% mark up + VAT on items (especially diamond engagement rings) ......so if you walk into a high end jewellers and pay 10k for a diamond ring, you will walk out with a 3-4k ring but you will have enjoyed half a bottle of champagne !

Second hand diamonds can offer great value....lets face it they are several million years old anyway smile you can always have them reset into a more modern ring.....the caveat to that is that diamonds today have a more modern cut (brilliant cut )and do look different to diamonds of 30+ years ago

Hatton garden is an absolute must, my wife jeweller refuses to buy from the high street, as previously stated 200-300% more so at somewhere like Tiffany & Co.

I ended up going to the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, which is similar to Hatton Garden (but on a smaller scale) and the both the range and price of diamonds was significantly better than the high street.

And probably never will be!

He got Mrs yeti's eternity ring made up for us, platinum and 5 diamonds, matched precisely to her wedding ring (but sat opposite the engagment ring if you know what I mean). Substantially cheaper than the wedding ring cost in Bristol as well rolleyes

Highly, highly recommended as Hatton Garden has dozens of seemingly identical shops. Dom guided us through the whole process and we ended up with a first class bit of jewellery.

I got our rings from a shop in Hatton Garden some 25 years ago .... and made the mistake of asking if they were open on Saturday! I had a withering reply. Things may have changed of course.

Or, you could look at other independent jewellers, outside the area. Hatton Garden is great if you want a quick turnaround, but you are limited to the 'menu' items. The diamond dealers are all competing for your hard earned money which keeps them keen so you'll get a good price, no doubt about it. On the metal side of things you are choosing from catalogues, which anyone can do, at any independent jewellers, anywhere in the country...... it's all online! Don't be fooled by the 'Hatton Garden' smoke screen. Other places can and will do the same thing for the same money. Many will go so far as to actually make something from scratch for you, not just assemble from the book. The worst thing you can do is go to the likes of Ernest Jones, Goldsmiths or H.Samuels. There you are really being ripped! That's why most EJ, HS and GS staff go to an independent like me for their own stuff.

Go to John Wyatt. Recommended by a friend. I've just used him and will definitely use him again. 22/23 St Cross Street, little black door. You'll prob have to call in advance.

Edited to add, they will make rings too, as i've just had done.

I have no affiliation with them.

I was very lucky, my parents are friends with a local jeweller and he happened to have a Tiffany princess cut diamond ring in stock with all the paperwork, box, leather binder etc. It originally cost £8k!!! I paid £2k

I got a friend of mine to make the wifes engagement ring.
It's a 3 part process, the actual ring, clasp and diamond.

The diamond had a full cert with it, from Isreal orginally, top quality diamond.
Paid £5k cash (was a good bonus month) took it to another friend who valued it for me,
They would buy that ring for around £8k and sell it retail for £11k.

Wife very happy.

I'm sure it was either processed, cut or traded in some way in Israel, but it sure as hell didn't come from there originally. Unless someone has dug a 100mile deep hole in the ground there that I was unaware of.

How confident are you in the other stuff they told you? smile
