Have my heart set on a new Sea dweller 4000 for my 40th in March ... was ordering through Frazer Hart but I have two trips booked in Jan to Colorado and Austria via Switzerland in March ... I'm pretty sure there won't be any discount in the UK but does anyone think it would be worth purchasing in the US or Switzerland? Or just buy from Frazer Hart in the UK?

So - just over £7K in the UK (estimate)
You can pick one up in the USA for around $9,500 - around £6,000 - Joma Watches will ship to your hotel in Colorado (sure that there are other dealers who will do this too) - it will only have a Joma warranty (2 years) and not Rolex.

Depends on your view on 'grey watches'!

Thanks Taffy. For £400 or £500 I'm not that bothered ... but for £1k (15% ish) I'd be more inclined ...

I presume 'grey' watches are like anything else 'grey' i.e. the same only cheaper?!;)

In Switz you might get 2-3% off paying cash or debit card and then you an claim the VAT back in shop but you'll need to get a custom stamp on the form and then post back to the shop.

If leaving Switz at a land border, quite often they won't stamp for export until you have proof you've paid entry VAT in the neighbouring country but if flying out then they'll just stamp at the airport.

Note that watches are often cheaper here anyway due to FX rates - list price of a SS Daytona was a few £££ cheaper than UK as I think the UK price vs Swiss price was around the 1.43chf / £1 mark but the rate is currently 1.51...

If you're flying to North America, why not buy duty free at the airport on your way out?

'Grey' means that you don't get the manufacturer's warranty with the watch - I bought my Omega Seamaster from these guys in 2004 - watch has been to Omega for a check and cleared all the checks so it was legit - I paid by wire transfer and they delivered to my hotel whilst I was over in the USA on business.

Making a saving on the VAT I assume? Whats the downside?

Might want to check that you could actually get one at the airport....

Sounds like the dealers don't carry everything in stock

I've tried that. Called the shop at LHR T5 to pre-order a Submariner only to be told that they don't stock them in the airport and can't order them in (policy decision). So… give them a call and ask, but be prepared to be brushed off.

There is now a Rolex store in T5 so I would doubt this would happen now.

Always worth a chat.
