1982 Rolex Datejust 16014 for £1800?
Discussion
I could use some PH watch expertise. The jeweller near our Italian hotel has a 1982 Datejust with blue face, white gold surround and what look like original box and papers in very good condition for €2400, which is £1800 at today's exchange rate.
I'm no expert, but I've always liked blue faces and the chunky lines of Rolexes of that era.
Am I right in thinking that this is a good price?

My understanding is that the metal wears on the link and pin as they flex then dust gets in and accelerates the wear. It's worse when the bracelet is worn loose as it moves all the time, and I think that era Rolex used a folded metal that was quite soft so they're susceptible to wear. Worst case is a link fails and the watch slips off.
If it's a dealer you could check against another watch. Side to side movement should be minimal.
Also check there are spare links available if the bracelet needs sizing for you.

Having been directed back to this thread by the OP, I thought I'd reply to a couple of posts people had directed to my picture....
The jubilee bracelet as pictured is currently around 18 months old, it is worn daily (I insist she does!) but I'm not convinced it's stretched too far in such a short space of time.
My watch however is around 15+ years old! worn by me pretty much every day for all that time regardless of what I was doing any particular day. I'm not sure just how bad it looks on an iPhone picture, but I can assure you it's pretty much mint to my eyes if you discount the bracelet, even then it's merely very light scratches that were polished out the last (& only) time it's been serviced.
Which (with regards to the OPs post on the other thread that pointed me here again) merely points out how difficult it is buying watches over the internet. Looking at these pictures, one person thinks my wife's practically brand new strap is stretched to buggery and my daily beater looks either in need of an overhaul or great if scratched an lived in.

To be honest the jubilee bracelet on that Lady Datejust looks more stretched than your oyster. Typically jubilees are particularly susceptible to stretch. Some Gump said:

Opposite opinion. Looks great scratched, looks lived in.
