I think I am going to order the silver steel case and a black fluero and silver steel weave type strap. I'm a bit concerned about it's durability as I tend to get very sweaty and dirty when doing outdoor sports but I like the finess monitors and it's handy that it tells the time and receives messages and e mails

No, that's all fair comment and exactly the sort of thing I meant about "possibly missing something".

I'm not sure it would be enough (in fact, I'm sure it wouldn't) to convince me personally to pay the large, and on-going premium needed to have everything fruit-based.

To be fair, I just bought a £4 touch-screen and £3 battery for my old HTC phone rather than buy a new one after breaking it becaue techno-problems tend not to bother me - but I can see how that guaranteed compatibility would be attractive to others.

I'm not entirely convinced that the possible issues with android based kit are anything like as widespread as the Apple marketing department would have people believe, but if everything you already have is by them then I guess continuing to buy from them is now the cheap option rather than moving to a more open, competetive, platform.

There is no 'large' ongoing premium here either just to clarify.

Macbook pro i bought in 2008 - yes it was expensive, £1500 but most people i know replace their windows laptop at least every 2 years at £350 a pop. it still does everything beautifully and runs the latest OS from apple without a hitch.
Apple TV, bought back in 2012 and it was £99 - these are now just £60 (cheaper than Amazons fire tv and the like)
iPhones are all on contract so get upgraded for free every 24months and we sell the old ones for usually £120-200 each on eBay.
iPad we bought in 2009 i think, £299

In fact, this watch will be the first pay out for fruit tech in 3 years and it all works faultlessly.

Hey, I never said Windoze users were immune from needless spend wink

Personally, I'm still using a £200 netbook bought in 2010 because i know that I don't need the latest Bill Gates offering. It's certainly not fast, but it works and does all that I need for business and personal use (I'm not a big gamer or that might be different)

With phones, my OH tends to upgrade for the fun of it / to have the latest, and I either take her old one if I need it or it gets sold. My total IT spend in the past 5 years has been around £450 including the netbook, phone and an Android phablet to give the business cheap PAYG internet (3 Mobile sees it as a phone so allows me to use the 321 deal on a 7 inch screen) when I'm out and about.

Then again, I'm a tight git and have never seen IT as anything but a tool - just like my screwdrivers and cleaning machines - to be replaced when it doesn't do the job anymore biggrin

I'll stay away from iphones until they start installing Samsung batteries! Watching people turn up in the office or at meetings hunting round for a 'fix' (charger) like some rabid junkie trying to stave off withdrawal is enough for me. Checked my Samsung (dual SIM card) this morning, been running for 2 days and 14 hours and is on 74% battery life remaining.

That's what's important to me, being able to call when I need to.

What model Samsung phone is it?
I used to get a week out of the Nokia 5110 years back.

I have been raised to think of watches as essential men's accessories - his only piece of jewelry - as important in demonstrating a mans preference, character, style, and whatever else, as his suit, his clothes, his shoes, or even his bloody haircut...the functionality and usefulness of the Apple watch (or indeed any watch) doesn't even enter into the equation.. for me that's NOT what a watch is for...

Now, this is just MY opinion - I appreciate that many people just don't give a toss about a mans watch but based on MY opinion, I would not be seen DEAD wearing an Apple Watch..

May as well tie an Iphone around my neck instead of a tie.

I think you'll have to wait for next season of TOWIE before there are any room for extra cast members.

Honestly, who gives a flying fk what others think what you wear says about you.

Here i am, geeky watch, take it or leave it. Jeeeeeesus!

Ouch!

Might as well tatoo up your face and go out naked - why bother expressing a preference for clothes even? Who gives a flying F**K what people think right?

Each to their own I suppose.

I mean - what's wrong with wearing an Iphone around your neck? You don't care what people think! smile

I have other parameters which govern what i do with my appearance.

1. i don't want to tattoo my face. purely because I don't want to look at it when i do my hair or catch a reflection smile
2. The phone would get uncomfortable after a while, i think the smaller, wearable watch would be more convenient.

haha!
Glad you've taken my comment in good humour.

But seriously Pixelpeep, don't you fancy something a little more **individual** or, dare I say it, stylish? OR, is an Applewatch your kind of thing? I mean that as a serious question - not intending to inflame etc...

likewise re good humour smile

I wear it because its functional, not what it looks like.

for me its about what it can do first, what it costs and then what it looks like.

i don't follow the same formula for women though lol smile

I suspect i would grow to like all the gadgets but it looks really quite ordinary on the wrist, like a cheap pedometer. Then again i had a moment of weakness recently and bought a quartz watch which i view as something of a betrayal of my way of thinking, so i'm probably not the target market.

I'm not sure what's individual about wearing a watch as a status symbol. If you want to get a watch that says something about you (as you apparently do) you have to get something people will recognise to give that impression. That's all consumerist advertising and brand nonsense. The complete opposite of individuality. Buying stuff to impress others is not individual at all.

Watch as status symbol or not, proper Swiss luxury watches are timeless, so to speak. Gadgets with in built obsolescence are the opposite proposition. The former you're paying for quality and design; the latter you're paying to try and look cool.

That's just advertising and brand nonsense. People wear watches for all kinds of reasons. Some to show off, some because they like the engineering some just like the look of it and now some as a gadget some even to tell the time.

Buy what ever you like apple watch or rolex but I'm not sure why you think an apple watch is just about looks and image when other luxury brands (which are less accurate) somehow aren't?

Because, like a phone, it will be worth nothing in 2-3 years, when you're two updates out of date, it doesn't work with new software, and even when it worked it will face only lasted a few hours between charges. There is no substance, and no longevity. It's like a metaphor for modern society though so maybe it's perfect. I won't be buying one though.

But you can give your decent (not necessarily expensive) watch to your kids and fully expect them to give it to their. Not so with s smart watch.
