Looking at buying a diamond and having it set separately. If I were to buy something like this:-

How do things like duty, vat etc work? Also, is this a good price?

Cheers

Simon

VAT and duty are payable on the total price (including shipping and insurance. VAT is the standard 20% and duty is dependant on what the goods are.

For loose diamonds the current rate is 0.0%, so only VAT to pay.

Taking the basic price and assuming $50 for insured shipping, that gives a landed price of £2425.54. Bear in mind that's using current exchange rate and a guess on the shipping price.

You may also get a handling charge from the courier (Post Office currently charges £8 iirc) as an admin fee for clearing customs for you.

My advice is that coming here for advice is advisable but having received said advice you would be well advised to cross reference against other sources.

Having no idea on what the mark up would be in your trade, would you say I would save money sourcing a stone this way or for a small premium it would be advisable to look for a UK dealer.

Depends how reliable you want them to be regarding possible issues. Easy to return or alter specs if the dealer is in the uk. Pain in the bum if you have a problem and you have to send a stone back to America. I can give you a price Monday if you want?

The other option is to buy an uncertified stone with the same grade. Couple of hundred quid cheaper but you have to trust the dealer that the stone is as quoted. I sell a lot this way and have the stone / ring independently valued, which gives the same info for less total cost.

We found that exact diamond in the register. My advice: buy it. Its priced at buyers market value so there is no profit for anyone other than you. Nearest I could get was 50% higher due to dollar and vat.

Sorry Eddie, I've been a complete numpty. I've read and enjoyed your threads on here but didn't associate your advise on my thread with yours. I'll definitely be in touch once the stone arrives, thanks once again for your advise smile

If one buys something like an IF stone of this type are they good investments historically? Have trade prices increased over the years a little/lot etc or not at all? Also if sold to a dealer used loose do they charge vat ie reduce amount they pay you if you've paid vat?
