Hi

What is the protocol for viewing a watch that an AD doesn't have in stock, if they order it in are you obligated to buy it?

TIA

Simply ask the AD in question, what their policy is for such instances.
Normally, depending on the price or what policy the distribution channel operates, they'll be able to SOR (sale or return) it.
If they have it at another branch or central warehouse, then it's even less of an issue.

All this presumes jt's a brand they have a business relationship with – slightly more convoluted or just not an option, if they don't.

Never had that with a watch, but when a car dealer tries it I walk. The dealer probably think's he's justified and that I'm a time waster. I'm happy too that I've not wasted my time on a dealer with such poor service.

I suppose it depends on the watch but I'd probably just find somewhere I could try one on with very little "guilt". Doesn't help you much I know.

Probably depends on the watch / retailer but I had a Tudor Pelagos delivered to Mappin & Webb last weekend for me to take a look at with no obligation to buy whatsoever. They did not carry any Tudor stock in St Andrews but happily had one sent across from Glasgow for me to try. I didn't buy it in the end (came away with a Sub Date instead) but there was never a hint of pressure on me to take the Pelagos, even before I had reached a decision on the Sub.

On the other hand, I remember a while back being told by another store in Edinburgh (who carried Tissot stock) that if I wanted to try a Tissot Powermatic 80 then I would have to buy it up front before they would get one in for me to take a look at which kind of defeated the purpose. I guess I can understand their position as the Powermatic 80 was not a line they carried in stock but it made it impossible for me to take my interest any further.

Thanks chaps.

This is new territory for me, so I didn't want to go asking my local AD for fear of making myself look like a tit.

Interestingly it is a Tudor I want to look at, and I have used the AD for other things in the past and they are very good. I'll pop in for a chat in the week.

I've never asked a dealer to get me a watch in, but make it clear that you want to see it to try and decide and see how they respond.

If they even suggest a commitment on your part before they get it in, say "Thanks very much" and walk away...

It's how I work for cars - A couple of times I've been told I need 'to place a deposit' before I can have a test drive - 'Fork Off' was roughly my response..
