Hi all
I am interested in buying a used TAG, and wanted to take a look at what is currently out there. I have found a few places selling used watches but have no indication of whether they are reliable/safe to buy from or not.

Chronext seem to have a decent range of used watches, as do Iconic watches, but being a relative watch newby I have no experience of good companies you can trust.

Would appreciate some pointers on who to buy from (or more importantly perhaps, who not to), and also thinking of perhaps buying directly from an individual via a forum or similar if anyone has ideas around that.

Cheers

I've not purchased one but Dom at Hackett watches has been highly recommended to me on multiple occasions.

I enquired about watch he had in stock last year and he was quick to come back and answer any questions I had.

Dom is one of the good guys - used him many times for new and used watches.

Yes Dom is your man. To check prices and information you could check out Blowers or Watchfinder.

If you want to buy a TAG, buy a TAG. I wouldn't let your desires be put off by others.

You guys should think about spending your own money and not somebody elses !

Thanks for the recommendation for Dom, I will take a look.

I just like the look and feel of the TAG's Ive tried before, and to be honest, with a price range up to about £800 I think I would be hard pressed to find the Breitling I really want. I was thinking of an Aquatimer or Professional for the money.

I was just thinking of a good midrange (in terms of price) watch that is better quality than the equivalent new watch for around £800, have I missed the mark here?

Edit: I feel a "what watch for £800" thread coming on, something I wanted to avoid because the range is vast. I really need to get a better understanding of quality marques as I want to become more educated in watches, as I simply follow the names I know currently. I do really like the look of some much cheaper watches, things by Casio even, but wanted something a bit more special that feels like a £1000 watch, but with the advantage of being a well looked after used example.

Is that first hand knowledge - have you seen some whilst looking through bins ? Have you owned some that you binned ?
Just wondered .

£800 would probably get you a Seamaster Quartz.

Depends whether the battery puts you off. It wouldn't for me on that budget.

TAG Heuer do know how to make nice looking watches, but they then spoil it by putting stupid price tags on them.
A number of people have relayed poor servicing stories, of watches coming back with damage, a different fault, poor timekeeping, or the original issue not fixed – so consequently having to go back for a 2nd or even 3rd visit, to be rectified.
Of course, you mostly hear the bad feedback, as opposed to the positive – but that's not to say there are many who have had poor experiences, and aren't part of forum life.
If you buy wise, you'll enjoy a nice looking watch, that'll hopefully not need to spend time at the service centre, but you'd also be daft not to explore a world of other brands, which offer much better value for your money and servicing/repair experience, if that need should arise.

You're going to be best served spending a LOT of time looking at chrono24, to get an idea of what your £800-1K budget will permit you to acquire and enjoy – so by all means, feel free to ask about brands/models which grab your fancy, as well as research them.
If you hang back on rushing into getting something just to scratch your itch, you might realise you've saved yourself from making a mistake or that a TAG Heuer is definitely the one, and go in with your eyes wide open.

Never had any issues with TAG servicing of my grand carrera. For that budget I'd consider an omega speedmaster as well, sorely tempted by a few on chrono24.

Lots of people who slag of certain watches or other products usually have never owned the product.

My Tag has never been a problem, but lets be honest there is a lot of snobbery with watches. The Rolex I had was the worst watch I ever had, repaired three times under warranty So I sold that on.

If you like it buy it but don't expect it to grow in value like some of the other brands.

If you want a TAG - buy a TAG.
But as others have eluded to - it will be worth next to nothing second hand.
You can do better for your money.

TAG's are like Stella Artois.
Most ( uninformed ) people think it is a premium beer.
On the continent it is universally considered as dishwater.

But - buy the watch you want for yourself... not to please other people.

Just be aware that the halo factor of the brand is not as strong as you believe it to be, and if you do sell it... it will be for groats.

I think that is rather harsh. There is nothing wrong with a Tag watch, albeit, you can can a better watch for your money.

I bought my Tag F1 Chronograph 22 years ago whilst on Holiday in Cyprus, cost me £350 and it's still going strong today, never serviced, just battery replaced a few times and a new clasp and that's it. I have other watches, Rolex Daytona S/S, Rolex Sea Dweller, Omega and a few other cheaper watches including a Casio G-Shock, I'm even buying an iWatch! but your statement is quite frankly nonsense.

Yep - OP would like recommendations on 2nd had watch web sites or dealers, not opinions on TAGs.
I have bought two watches via Chrono24 and one from eBay. Usual caveats apply, do some research on the seller, look for reviews and engage him in conversations by email and then confirm everything on the phone. Ultimately it's down to trust but you can help yourself by doing a lot of checks in advance.
