well for not an awful lot more than your 2k budget i just purchased this in Platinum ........the equivalent today is about 14k
Didn't know you worked in a nursery MG. Some kid has crayoned on your cuff

Just what is "not an awful lot more"?

(lovely watch)
sorry about the cuff....seemed like a good idea at the time .......and sorry about my appalling English.....but, on a positive note the watch is rather splendid .......so for the same money as a stty crappy Tag you can own an iconic watch make in gorgeously decadent platinum, in absolutely wonderful condition and previously owned by a rather nice chappie (Mr Yeti)

A decent second hand watch is the way forward in this case. You'll be surprised at just how many watches have either been very well looked after by their previous owners, or have lived in a safe for the duration of their lives. As such, you can pick up an excellent condition piece at a very good price, which depending on your choice of watch, should hold (or potentially appreciate).

If you can stretch your budget, stainless steel sport Rolex watches are very popular. There are various Rolex models available for £2K, but I'm not certain on their resale popularity. Failing that, as others have said, Omega Seamaster or Speedmaster ... Perhaps a Moonwatch? Prices in the EU are a lot less than the UK, so if you're traveling anytime soon, make the most of this!

How about something like this? Classic, desirable, will hold value and a bit special ...

Alternatively, a 2013 piece from Charles Fish (UK), sans bracelet:

http://www.chrono24.com/en/omega/speedmaster-moonw...

So many available on Chrono24 ...

I'm going to enjoy the shopping! I may be in Europe soon, so I'll do some prep before I go.

Yeah, "Ooo you've got a Seiko!" isn't often heard!

So any Rolex? Am I looking at a budget of about £2k?
I take it you have never heard of Grand Seiko or Spring Drive?
Exactly his point, though, surely...?

Any new watch is going to depreciate (well, maybe not ANY, but I certainly any commonly available watch, Rolex DEFINITELY included) in the short term.

To protect against depreciation, you need to find a good watch that's done its depreciating.

A Rolex Submariner or Daytona from the '70s or '80s (maybe '90s) is probably going to do that for you, if that's your only requirement, not least because they jack up the price every year! biggrin

M
A £2,000 Daytona?
Car boot sale! biggrin

I see your point, although initially the question was "How much would I need to spend?", so I refer the OP to my first couple of sentences. smile

Yup, I think people are getting caught up on the big budget.

How much would I need to spend? To buy a half decent time piece that would, if not appreciate, NOT depreciate in value?

The answer is anywhere from £100 upwards, so long as you buy something where the previous owner(s) have taken the hit on depreciation on your behalf.

I don't read the question as "what can I get for £2K?"

You'll get a second hand SKX007 for less than £100 which meets your criteria.

I think some of you are being wilfully ignorant of the spirit of the question...or you're taking it at such face value that you're either a computer or a different sort of Spectrum.

I hope I speak for the OP that he's implying that he wants something a bit more special on his wrist than a £100 watch, no matter how good the depreciation is on it!

I know there's an almost anti-snobbery thing that goes on sometimes but I don't think this part of PH was really for people who can't see past a Timex or G-shock.

'Quartz are more accurate and a hundredth of the price!'

Yes I know but none of us drive Hyundais and they do the same job as a fancy car.

Phew!

I think if you buy well 2nd hand, then you can pretty much choose your own budget and if you keep the watch in good nick, you should make it back.

I bought a Breitling new, owned it for 8 years and sold it for exactly the same - it was a rare model and I'd negotiated well at the point of sale. I've also got an SMP300 that is worth what I paid for it new so Rolex isn't the only answer, although it's probably the easiest to get away with it on.

Where does one find one for that sort of money, I never seem to find them that cheap.

Yup.
The absence of any budget in the OP must have confused me.

Now it's all clear I recommend you buy an MB&F HMX. Limited to 80 and more special than a £100 Seiko.

Hmm.

Some people are born t0553rs.
Some have t0553rness thrust upon them.
Some have to work very hard to become a t0553r.

Work it out.

You got sarcastic after it was pointed out that you'd got the wrong end of the stick. I think that's why he's implying that you're acting a bit tosserishly.

PH is a great resource, a great way of getting advice from people with more knowledge and experience when one is in need of guidance.

But it never fails to amaze me that people DO act like complete tossers in some attempt to be clever, or because they feel slighted in some way.

Of course I can't afford $200k plus! If I could I wouldn't give a stuff about your opinion.

If I was having a chat in a bar to seek advice on a watch, you wouldn't make a stupid suggestion like that.

I've no idea what point you were trying to make, but I asked a simple question (which I knew would need expanding) and I've received some really helpful, knowledgeable friendly advice. For which I thank all who have contributed.

But your statement does nothing to help the thread/conversation.

OK, maybe I'd normally react in a slightly more restrained manner, but I was sitting in an airport which was closing down around me, waiting for a delayed flight, and feeling somewhat grumpy.

But still; how did that post help the thread?

Edited due to a new phone with stupid predictive text.

OK, T40ORA.With a budget of 2k, I'd recommend that you go browse chrono24. Buy from Europe as the pound is excellent against the Euro & you won't get clobbered for 20% import duty.
But, caveat emptor. "Trusted Seller" simply means the seller has paid his Chrono24 bills. It does not mean that you should trust him!

Go take a look. If there's something you want an opinion on, post here or ask by pm. You should be able to work out who on this thread will give you a useful opinion!
