Agree about the waiting list - I tried a few dealers at the end of last year. Some just said no way, some said 3-5 years, and one said 12 months so I put my name down. Then received a call 6 weeks later saying they had one in stock! I wasn't ready at that point, so asked them to bump me down the list again but I'm not expecting to have to wait the whole 12 months.
I went to David M Robinson in Manchester last month and left my details with the manager there and told her I was looking for a SS Daytona with black dial as a gift for myself to celebrate recent good news (baby, job etc.)...got a call from her 3 weeks later that they had one in stock for me. Picked it up at their Canary Wharf branch a few days after.
I think the waiting list is BS...although they went to lengths to tell me that my "story" pulled at their heart strings and thus the speed of delivery. Very good, personal service at both branches I visited though. Give them a try.

Ok, just to round this thread off...
To celebrate being not quite 50 (and having a very understanding OH) I did the deal today on the pre owned 16520, tbh as soon as I put it on my wrist i was sold
