Ok, apologies for starting yet another Daytona thread but I have a decision to make.

Looking to trade up my 7 yr old SS Datejust for a SS Daytona (white dial). I'll be wearing the watch on a daily basis.

Its a 50th Birthday prezzy to myself and its probably the last watch I'll ever buy (in other words, don't try to change my mind smile)

Now the decision... In discussion with a few ADs it would appear that even if I get on someone's waiting list they can't guarantee to have one available in By mid August 2016 (when I 'need' it).

Don't mind paying list but don't want to pay any kind of premium. Sensible suggestions on alternatives to the official AD/waiting list option are welcome, but not really interested in 'go to Dubai, go to Schipol Airport' schemes.

My other option is to buy preowned. The former AD where I bought my last two Rolex watches has a very nice preowned one with the Zenith movement available as a private sale (he'll put a 2 yr warranty on it, its in fine fettle). Its priced a tad below list for a new one and he'll make me an offer on the Datejust. Its a bit soon to make the purchase but will I be kicking myself if I wait a year before buying preowned SS Daytona with the zenith movement (ie are they appreciating significantly?)

Advice from the PH watch watchers much appreciated!

I would look at selling your watch privately, if your not a member already tz forum is a good one, but you have to get a certain amount of posts before you can sell.

I bought a new white face daytona in August for my 30th, my local AD could get me the black easily enough but not the white, which I ended up buying whilst in vegas

For me new was the only option, as the used were the same price

Afternoon,

I decided to buy a white faced Daytona a few months back. I didn't really bother to much with the AD's as I'm not interested in waiting months/years? for a watch. I bought mine from Dominic Hackett of Hackett Watches. It was just over a year old, never worn, tags/stickers etc intact (original owner got buyers remorse and stuck it in a draw for a year), I paid RRP. He has a used one up for sale now, would save you £1k.

Having bought it I was then sceptical I'd like it. Now, having worn it a bit, its grown on me enormously, is very comfortable and seems to be superbly made.

Where did you pick one up in Vegas? I went to a few places but were told by each that they were like gold dust and seemed ever rarer than in the UK.

Thanks guys, bit nervous about selling the datejust privately (too many horror stories for me, although tz seems better than most).

Don't get down to London that often but based on what I've seen on here Dom is the man so won't rule that out.

Any thoughts on the appeal of the current Daytona vs the Zenith movement version?
(Bear in mind its a keeper so it'll need servicing etc)

Blowers in Hull always have a few BNIB Daytonas. They'll p/ex your watch, nice and easy transaction. The new movement is far more robust than the Zenith, although lower numbers for that one will surely lead to it being more collectable/valuable but that'll not matter if it's a keeper.

Firstly in Rolex shop in the wynn, they had one to one side for a supposed customer who had left a deposit on it but never collected, I was unsure if I wanted the white or black at that point so went to think and when I went back it was gone, tbh I didn't believe them..

I then went to Tourneau a few days later and was looking at the pre-owned, after chatting to a guy for a while; and saying I would only buy new, he asked if I was looking to buy today which I said yes to, but was unsure what colour to go for; two mins later he had pulled both white and black, new out the safe and I got to try them both on together.

Not sure about that. The Zenith El Primero movement is widely regarded to be one of the best "mass produced" automatic chronograph movements ever made. The new one certainly has a better power reserve and is probably easier to service due to a lower part count. But I suppose since Rolex messed up the El Primero to put it in a Daytona then you might be better off with a Cal 4130.

But from a wearers perspective I doubt there is much in it.
Personally I would choose the El Primero movement because I happen to think it is a superb movement and was the first automatic chronograph movement to be put in to production. But I am not a fan of Rolex so I don't think, from a resale point of view, it will make a huge difference.

If you're a member on TZ, there is an October 2014 white faced Daytona being sold for £7300. No link to the seller, just seen it bumped on the forum this afternoon.

True - interesting article here about it all actually:
http://www.onthedash.com/docs/Project99.html#ElPri...

Personally I see a modular approach as not doing the job properly but horses for courses...

Sorry for the thread hijack - back to discussing Daytonas (I would still choose the El Primero movement...)

No worries. Glad you enjoyed it.

Just out of curiosity...
Why not get a really nice Zenith Chronomaster with an El Primero? The Zenith version of the movement is a much smoother movement (running at 36,000VPH in the Zenith as opposed to 28,800VPH in the Rolex) plus you can get them with the Day/Date/Moonphase complication which is really nice IMO & I don't think that Daytonas get that option.

About a year ago I put my name down with an AD and was advised it would be 3 years, had a call last week to advise that I was now 3rd on the list, so many drop out apparently, and should have it within 4-6 months, less if numbers 1 or 2 don't take theirs.

I couldn't see the point in buying used when the prices are so similar and I'm looking forward to buying it from an AD and having it brand spanking.

I have previously bought two Daytona's off Dom H. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
