WGAS what Clarkson says or thinks? He's probably only venting because Rolex won't send him a freebie now he's off TG (or maybe he's all grumpy because someone offered him a cold platter).

The only person who sways my buying decisions is Mrs MikeVeal, I couldn't give a monkey's about some random pugilist's opinion.
He has always been outspoken against Rolex for whatever reason. For years now.

So it's probably nothing to do with having lost Top Gear wink

He's also quite a wealthy chap - could buy one if he actually wanted one. He doesn't. Simple really.

Who actually cares to be honest. Buy what you want and drive what you want. (I wear a Tag, and usually buy white performance Fords and have owned Subarus in the past)
Make what you like from that.

I drive an Austin Healey and wear Tag,Oris and Timex watches (dependent on what I am doing), I wouldn't ever wear a Rolex....just can't see myself ever wanting to either.

I made a bit of spare cash about 15 years ago and decided to get a watch as a present to myself. When I was younger, more shallow and immature, I'd wanted a Rolex. When it came to it, Rolex still seemed like by far the best investment for the money (c.£1500), but I'd grown to dislike the image. I spotted an Explorer I and immediately chose it since I assumed (correctly) that not many people would recognise it as a Rolex. I've since worn it every day and it's been a great watch that I still love the understated look of. Yes, it's got some scuffs and flaws these days, but It might just be worth a bit more than I paid for it. Best of both worlds AFAIC.

BTW I always thought Clarkson was bit of a front bottom from the first time I saw him.

I have a submariner, non date as I have always liked the shape and design of the watch, I also prefer the non date face, that means I'm properly weird. nuts

I don't think it's blingy, or a statement, I just like it. irked

Exactly. I doubt he's envious of the odd reader of his column who wears a Datejust. It's pointless and childish casting aspersions on the owners of them, but hasn't his style of humour always been a bit pointless and childish?

I find him funny on the whole and I don't take offence at articles like this.

I stayed and ate at an exceedingly expensive hotel/restaurant last night (Brenners Park, Baden-Baden) and noticed some beautiful pieces.
The sulking russian at the next table was sporting a Richard Mille.
The old boy opposite had a PP Nautilus, his wife a Cartier tank, littered with diamonds.
The english party of 8: the grandfather was a Patek, his son a Breguet and his son an Omega Dark side of the moon.
I was letting the side down in my Breitling SuperOcean.
There were 2 rolexes. The waiter had a Submariner, the Maitre'D a Daytona.

In the Rolex concession at Harrods yesterday, the Rolex rep/salesperson (an early 20's girl) was wearing a Stainless Daytona....

30% discount for Harrods staff on those, Rolex's own staff are likely to get a better discount.

Exactly, no different to seeing a lowly BMW salesman driving round in a nice 435 or whatever.

All available at <$100 on aliexpress:

At that distance, I'd struggle to identify the watch, never mind ascertain authenticity.

That may be the case but I would contend that the SS Daytona is NOT an exclusive watch. It may be lovely and beautiful (which it IS), but it is the Daytona I see most - more than all the others Daytona variants.... which is really counter-intuitive...no?

Gents, I don't think ANY recent Rolex is especially exclusive today, although the full gold ones are a "little" rarer - and that's not because they're expensive - but perhaps more because they might be considered a little "garish" on pasty white skin on a cold February Tuesday in the home counties... smile

Rolex is NOT a luxury brand anymore I think, but they make a quality product. I never hear of them going wrong or any QC issues. Quite excellent especially given the huge production volumes.

I read this review of my Rolex type, and it's pretty damning as far as quality goes:

Depends on your view of exclusive I guess.

The average wage in the UK is around £24k gross? A sports model in steel is around £6k net?

It's not hard to buy one, for sure, but price wise the real ones are still exclusive to the majority of people.

20 years ago before tinternet as we know it. So a lad couldn't Google the best watch of the day and I didn't frequent Switzerland or Bond Street.....I.bought a lovely, simple, discreet watch, only wanted one watch that I could wear anywhere, anytime without being bling or shouty but also be reliable. It was a Rolex. Still got it today and does exactly the same job as 20 years ago. The plan is to pass it on to my kids. Looking in the shops today, yes there are still diamond encrusted ones, as there were back then, but never, ever seen one worn in London. Clarkson obviously keeps much more flashy company than me.
