TAG
But as always, forget about what others think or even say, buy it because you like it.
Well said , I have a 2000 series But as always, forget about what others think or even say, buy it because you like it.

about 15 years now , only need 2 new batteries at about £50/80 a time
At the same time my son bought a Brightling, batteries cost 4 figures , and now the watch needs a new movement £400/500 quoted , that for watch that cost twice the price of mine at the time
Nowt wrong with Tags

Reading this with interest as whilst I am by no means an expert (I buy what I like the look off and have several Citizen Chrono's). However, I have the opportunity to spend around £2500 on a watch and I like the look of the Calibre 16 Formula 1 TAG, the on line reviews seem good but what is the perceived wisdom here?

V niceThe 16 may have some reliability issues which is what lead me to the 1887 in the first place. Take a look at Watchuseek and chrono24 for what is available from none authorized dealers and second hand. The watch I posted is LNIB (like new in box) and I paid $2800 down from a list price of $8000. Assuming I get the actual watch it will be a "bargain".

I'm still looking into this and stumbled upon a calibre 36 carrera at a reasonable price. The 36 is a Zenith movement so should be good. What are your opinions on this? Is it still a brand perception issue?
It's got an El Primero movement, pretty much the best auto chrono movement ever. I think that watch looks unbalanced the chrono dials should be further apart, but that's entirely my opinion. I think TAG get slated on watch forums... In the wider world 99% of the world will see a Tag Heuer and think nice watch. I would suggest that to non watch folk Tag is 2nd only to Rolex in terms of brand perception.
When you say a good price, is it new and how good a price is it? They are what £6k ish RRP. At £3ish I would buy a TAG, not that one as I don't like it, but you know what I mean. Have you seen the Calibre 17 powered Carreras... http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/TAG-Heuer-Carrera-Mens... I really really like them (3rd on my wtb list lol)
I do like the look of the one you posted though. I assume with mine the the dial locations are dictated by the movement.
I think Tag get slated due to brand dilution in the 90's by using Quartz movements and more recently they have been having quality issues. Tag we're not the only ones using Quartz movements in "high end" watches. Omega were as well. The 1995 Bond watch of choice was a Seamaster with a Quartz movement. That was a low point!

That is a seriously nice watch in my opinion.
It's the sort of design that looked great 30 years ago, looks great today and will still look great in another 30 years time.
Exactly my point.... I really couldn't care less what the supposed connoisseurs of fine watches say or think about Tag, I love the retro designs of the Monaco, Monza etc, I couldn't care less about residuals... The most important thing is will I enjoy wearing it?? It's the sort of design that looked great 30 years ago, looks great today and will still look great in another 30 years time.

With the retro Zenith El Primero's, I'd probably go with a newer one, but then it's essentially the same watch, only with a better case.
All IMO, of course.

I don't think anyone here is a TAG hater and that includes Monsignor Gould.
When people ask if they should buy TAG, they invariably get the same response: TAGs are overpriced, therefore you can get a better quality of watch for the same money if you buy elsewhere.
That said, no premium watch represents value for money, when a £10 Casio will be more accurate, more rugged and require less servicing.
Pound for pound TAGs are not as good as Omega, Longines, Oris etc. That does not make them bad watches, just means that you could do better for your money.
If there's a TAG that you really like and nothing in the Omega, Longines, Oris etc. line up that tickles your fancy, you'd be mad to buy anything other than the TAG. On the other hand, if you're buying a TAG purely because you perceive you're buying a haute horology brand, you're stark raving bonkers.
Its not TAG hating, its knowing enough to recognise that TAG doesn't stack up well against similarly priced competitors.

i am of modern TAGS because they are selling (successfully ) £150 watches for £1500 and idiots still pay it ! ........but I think some of the older Tag Heuer are OK and worth their hype ........each to their own When people ask if they should buy TAG, they invariably get the same response: TAGs are overpriced, therefore you can get a better quality of watch for the same money if you buy elsewhere.

I hate TAG watches (because they are unreliable and look like poo) and I wouldn't be seen dead in a 911(because it would confirm that I'm a knob, which I obviously am) .......however there is a difference .....TAG's (mostly) have the beating heart of a crappy $40 movement were as 911"s have half decent engines......... unless you purchased a 996 then you have a high chance of the engine blowing up.......Rolex make great reliable movements and watches that hold their value well.....but they do sell more than 1m / year which is a bit off putting
Hands up, my mistake, MG is a TAG hater.[/i]Edited by mikeveal on Monday 29th June 09:17
