I'm not really a watch person but Mrs 2.5pi wants to buy me a watch for a birthday present, I've got a Breitling everyday watch but she's suggesting as a supplement a PANERAI LUMINOR 1950 CHRONO MONOPULSANTE 8 DAY GMT Titanium , I like it but I'm curious as to how more informed folk view it.

I'm in the "it looks v.nice but WTFDIK category" which makes me likely to make a rookie error.

PS sorry about the Caps but iPhone

Love my Panerai

They're marmite. They either suit you or they don't. If you think it does suit you, then go for it. Lovely watch.

UK list price is £12800 and up I think... I know at the lower price points discounts are rare on Panerai, normally limited to a free strap or 2, maybe 5% cash.

Can't beat a pam, way more exclusive than Rolex, ignore the haters, they are great watches. I am a strict base man but still that is a cool watch... Enjoy

This isn't about you or what you want.

Get what she wants.

Even if you hate it.

She loves it.

And will love you wearing it.

That is all that matters.

Cracking watches and much more exclusive than Rolex IMO.

The only danger is once you've got one, you'll be wanting another............Just make sure you try it on first, as already mentioned they are a big 44mm and quite heavy so you need a fairly thick wrist to carry it off.

I have 4 of them and couldn't agree more with the all the comments on here.

I have other watches but always get positive comments whenever I wear them, real stand out pieces.

All the best

Pams are just lovely. Classier than a Rolex and shows you have an appreciation of fine watches and some taste as well.

I have 3 and just love wearing them. The older cushion style cases as used on the Radiomirs are just lovely.

Apologies for the reflections and 'soft' focus.

As others have said go and check them out in the flesh. I was set on getting one until I tried it on and decided it just wasn't for me.

Pams are great watches, but actually they are not, and no you don't and no you don't

Ah - matter of opinion. Whilst there is no doubt Rolex makes excellent watches to me seeing someone with a Rolex just tells me they have no imagination and are going with the crowd.
Pams on the other hand are less known about and not such a "I've just had a bonus and want a nice watch so I'll buy a Rolex/Omega/Tag" item. They kind of say to me that you are able to think for yourself.
Of course true class really comes with Breguet or Patek Phillipe etc.

Depends what circles you move in I guess. I don't move in a bonus / money orientated environment.
Pams are just as known as Rolex in my part of the world, the former seen as a reasonably well made fashion thing, the latter as a very well engineered status thing. Both the obvious choice. Both pretty classless and easily obtainable.
I'm with you on the PP angle, now there is a manufacturer with true class.

I agree. Buying a Pam shows no more imagination or appreciation of watches than buying a Rolex (in my opinion of course). Obviously that's not to say that Pam/Omega/Rolex etc owners don't appreciate a good watch, but if I saw someone wearing a Dornblüth (for example), import only watch or something not available on the high street, I'd assume they were an enthusiast that didn't make the obvious choice.

Not so sure Benny, I have a PAM and a Rolex and I would consider myself somewhat of an enthusiast. Yes, they may be the default choice for people who just want a status symbol but there is a reason they became the default in the first place...

I agree with you and I'm sure there are a large proportion of Rolex etc owners who are true enthusiasts who have made their decision based on the quality of the watch, but there are also a huge number who really haven't got a clue what they've purchased beyond the brand name. Thats another debate really (which has been done to death!). My original point essentially was that I don't see a distinction between Rolex and Panerai when it comes to exclusivity or making an imaginative choice since both are popular and easily purchased on the high street.

(For what it's worth, I think a WIS is more likely to own a Rolex than a Panerai - for the technical merits of the watch rather than as a brand choice).

I think the fact that Rolex also has an uninterrupted independent history compared to Panerai could be a factor here as well, and I agree that a WIS is more likely to own a Rolex over a PAM. Certainly not a hard and fast rule though. Get yourself one of the original Officine Panerais and you'll get two for the price of one anyway, as Rolex designed them.

2 for the price of one??? The watch the op is looking at is £12k not £40k lol

I think it is blatantly obvious that more WIS will own a Rolex, Panerai make 35,000 watches a year, Rolex make 600,000
