I have an 20 year old Dunhill watch that I though needed a new battery, but a High street jewellers told me it needs a service and quoted £288. Nothing to those in this forum of course but about three times what I'd spend on a new watch. Might there be a chance of getting the work done more cheaply if I shop around or should I just buy a new watch?

The watch would have been around £1000 rrp new if that's relevant.

Shopping around can't hurt. Your jewellers will just ship it out anyway, so you could at least save the margin. Variomatic on here comes recommended.

What model is it?

Firstly, I think £288 for a new battery is ridiculous!!! Whether a Quartz watch needs servicing, I leave to Variomatic and others more knowledgeable than me to comment.

Secondly, I reckon Dunhill watches have a reputation for being good.

What's novel about Dunhill watches? Strap that smells like nicotine, hands that look like cigarettes, a smoke break timer? tongue out

Alfred Dunhill Ltd isn't a cigarette company, Dunhill cigarettes are a Rothmans brand.

I can (very) happily quote half that without even seeing the watch. And then probably give a 50% discount on top for a fellow PHer! That's an absurd price for completely replacing most quartz movements, let alone servicing one!
