Seiko Alpinists look good on small wrists. In general, the japanese domestic market seikos fit a smaller build pretty well!

The Seagull 1963 is nice if you can live without any water resistance and an acrylic (ack) crystal.

Thanks, where's best to source these in the UK?

Personally I wouldn't rule out an auto. Modern oils should mean that mechanical watch services are required far less frequently than battery changes. Perhaps three or four times less frequently.

With that amount of money to spend, and the desire for a smaller watch I'd certainly be looking vintage. But then I prefer vintage.

There is loads of choice.
Late 90's / Early 00's Titanium Quartz Tissots. You'll have to hunt to find one, but all should be under budget.
T660
T670
T760
T770

An Omega Dynamic from the 90's would be over budget, but has a more modern look but a modest size.

It would really help if you gave us a hint as to style. "Lizzy Duke" tells me nothing. Are you looking for a diver style, a rugged watch, or a dress watch? Chronograph? square or round face? Bracelet, leather, rubber, nylon, integrated plastic strap?

I wouldnt worry too much about ordering a product from Japan on Amazon or an online retailer like Higuchi or Seiya Japan. I've found japanese sellers extremely reliable.

Plus, Seiko will fix anything they make, no questions asked, very reasonably. You just post and pay.

Round face, ideally chronograph, either black leather or silver bracelet. I had liked the look of the Longines Hydroconquest in black but really it looks a bit like a homage to a Rolex Submariner which would be my dream watch... if I had the cash!

What about something classic like this for £300? 38.5mm x 11mm, automatic, steel cased?

Oops not black faced. I'll go and have another look getmecoat

Not keen on the gold, but have since been looking at/ obsessing over very similar variants and I think this may be about to cost me some money! biggrin

As I'm not familiar with the Brand, what are people's thought in terms of quality/ reliability/ movements used?

42mm & 380 Euro ?

Go to Chrono 24 or ebay and search for Dive watches.
Generally speaking the older watches will be smaller.

42mm would not be considered a smaller watch.

Its a diver per the request. I challenge you to find a modern (as in brand new) diver under 40mm.
42mm isn't actually that large for a diver, the Stienhart doesn't look or feel that big.
I agree by the way, not small at all. That's why I'm suggesting pre-loved, older = smaller, new=big.

Okay but the OPs original post was asking for a black faced chrono not a diver and preferably quartz.

Yeah spot on thanks RichB. I'd seen the steinhard but it's obviously 42mm, so 'out of scope' The Longines is 39mm and fits the bill.

I'm not going second hand so that's not an option. Like wearing second hand shoes. No thanks.

Talking of second hand, have a look at this one, purely to demonstrate the durability... the back of that bracelet is incredibly scratched for such a new watch. Has the owner been doing manual labour in it or are those scratches typical of a few months use?

Shinola do the Runwell in 36mm and 38mm. It's closer to £500 but a nice watch available with a variety of case, face and strap colours.

I would absolutely go for a Seiko Alpinist. Such an attractive and well made watch for the money and perfect size.

You could consider a seiko cocktail time watch - 39mm dress watch.

I have an Alpinist and a Cocktail Time, and love them both. They both offer far more than the price would suggest.

I'm officially out. I can't help.
OP doesn't want a diver, but he likes the Longines Hydoquest and a Rolex Submariner is a dream watch.
OP is keen on Elizabeth Duke, but doesn't want an Argos watch.
OP wants a smaller watch, but wont consider an old watch.

Good luck OP.
