Hi All - I'm going in circles and was hoping for some sound advice. I lost a watch bought for me 14 yrs ago by my wife and have had a decent insurance payout.(Baume & Mercier) My frustration is that they have sent me a gift card for Ernest Jones which is limiting my choice of watches. Rolex would have been my preference however they don't sell them. I can't see a simple way to turn the gift card in to cash without risk i.e. Ebay.

Therefore I've narrowed it down to the following 3 watches, which I appreciate are all wildly different. I do have a thought in my head that one day I may trade this new watch in towards a Rolex though I'm not sure that's the right approach to have.

Your thoughts and wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Tudor for me, but as you say, they are all very different, so it comes down to personal taste.
Amazed you've been given a gift certificate as an insurance payout, pretty pointless if you can't use it to replace the thing you lost. What's to stop them giving you an Argos voucher? They sell watches, after all.

Go with the Tudor. You want a rolex and that's the closest you'll find.

Personal taste, but to me the Breitling is hideous and the Tag is not far behind! The Tudor, then, even though I've never really 'got' the whole "Rolex homage made by Rolex" thing.

Of those, definitely the Tudor!

Don't understand why you've not got cash from the insurance payout - what sort of policy did you have?

Have you had it out with the insurance company on the voucher thing?? That's sounds well out of order if you ask me. I'd be fighting my case with them.
It's a lot of money to spend on a watch and to be pushed into spending it in Ernest Jones is shocking!.

Claimed on my home policy - AXA - told them the watch was purchased for £1300 and they offered £2100 on the card. From the research I've done they'll offer me significantly less if I push the cash angle. EJ do sell the same brand of watch that was lost.

Thinking aloud ... I wonder what the trade in value would be on a brand new unworn Tudor P - i.e. I walk out of EJ in to Goldsmiths and try and pick up a Rolex. Given I've had a larger payout than I anticipated plus, I could get 12% cash back through Quidco and I'll be paying for the extra £1k with further EJ vouchers that I can buy at 15% discount perhaps this is an option?

Likely lose too much on the trade in?

A.

Hi,

Can you check the insurance policy was or was not "new for old"?

Not sure if this is a crazy idea but how about going into your local Rolex shop and explain the situation and see if they can't come up with some form of deal with EJ where EJ get to sell something to them that they can resell and you get to give them more money for a Rolex?

If you are lucky you may get 50% of the price paid.

I recently claimed for a broken laptop, was expecting a voucher and was surprised when a cheque arrived.

Go into the shop and pay for a cash buyer....

You get the cash, and pay for their purchase.

Do EY stock Longines? If so take a look at the moon phase master collection.

Of those the Tudor is first preference and the Tag second. The Breitling would never make any short list of mine.
As suggested look into a Black Bay Bronze. They are the dogs as far as I'm conerned

Another vote for the Tudor here, it's a cracking watch imo.
