As there are a lot of people in the "know" here, what is the consensus on Breitling watches? I've seen a couple of models that I like but having never owned one before, I'd like to hear people's views on whether they're worth the money?

Here are the two I've found. Any thoughts on which looks the best?

Personally, I can't stand BrightBling but each to their own.

Yes, I know what you mean. The two above stood out but I'm wondering if there are a bit garish.

I'm still deciding whether to go back to my original idea of the Heuer Carrera below:

I have to say the Carrera looks far classier.
As per the previous poster BrightBling (love the name!) are just too garish for my tastes but OP go with what you like - its your watch.

For a slightly different suggestion how about this?

I'd always go for Breitling over Tag from a quality point of view, my last Tag was plagued with issues.

It's a bit blingy, but I really like the 2nd Breitling you posted.

I've had small issues with my Tag Senna in the 13 years I've had it but nothing major. It has also stood up to a lot of punishment over the years and is tough as teak. The looks are also more understated than the BB and classier imho. Much prefer the Carrera given the choices above. I also fell a little for the marketing and prefer the Motorsport link of Tag to the Travolta pilot thing.

Plenty of other Brightling watches which are less "blingy" - Montbrilliant, for example!

I currently own 3 Breitling's and have owned a total 11 over the past few years. I love them, very versatile and reliable watches. They are as mentioned they not to everyone's taste but as long as the watch is to your taste then what else matters?

They hold their money well if you buy carefully - I've only purchased one new that I have no intention of selling so the value it retains is immaterial. However the others that I buy I buy to wear and enjoy but with the idea that I'll pass them on when I fancy a change and I have never lost any money on them yet, on the other hand I have never really gained but that's not the point.

Overall I have found the quality good and had no real issues. Customer service is good too but I have heard some horror stories.

I really like that! I don't know a great deal about Chopard but I'll have to research the brand a bit more!

Breitling are OK, depending on the level of bling, and recently started using their own in house movements, 90's and 000's watches mainly use tarted up ETA units. Nothing wrong with that, of course.
If you want a Breitling without the bling, try and find a first gen Blackbird, as they were SS and all brushed surfaces.

I've had my Blackbird since 2003, bought it new and still love it

The newer ones are all a bit too shiny for me.

I like some of Breitlings current watches, but those first two are certainly worthy of the 'BrightBling' tag! frown

I wouldn't go for either personally.

The Heuer Carrera looks quite nice if it's really a choice of that or one of those Breitlings, I'd take the (TAG) Heuer.

I own two Breitlings, but neither are current models.

A review here:

It uses a 7750 movement which is not uncommon amidst watches in this price range and Chopard have an excellent reputation for making high quality cases.
Founded in 1860 so plenty of heritage if thats your thing. They have an excellent history of supporting motorsport as well.

Something a little different from the usual Breitling/Tag/Rolex/Omega you see everywhere.

Cartier do a lovely chrono in a similar style but its quite a bit more money!

I know there isn't a lot of love on here for TAG Heuer, but that one you're looking at is, in my opinion, a beautiful watch. The Breitlings, on the other hand, are not my cup of tea at all and already look dated. But it's your money and you should spend it on whichever one you like most.

I agree. I've had my eye on that Tag for a while and it's still my favourite.

It's a taste thing. Or lack of it when buying one of those first two watches biggrin !

Want's a Breitling, but also likes the look of the Carrera... Hmmn...

Take a wander over to Chrono24 and hunt down a Top Time from the pre Sicura days of Breitling.

If you like that heuer have a look at the zenith el primero 36000vph.

I've got one. It's a stunner. Highly recommended.

I own a Breitling, it is a well down the food chain and a bit understated. ( if a Breitling can be )

These look like Jewish Racing Gold designed.

But horses for courses.

Post up whatever you decide on though smile

I've been procrastinating on a Breitling purchase for the past couple of months as I really like the idea of a pre-owned Navitimer (pre 1970's), as I think a new watch just wouldn't hold it's value (not that that's the only requirement)... Anyway this site has been really useful for guidance and info http://breitlingsource.com/
