Entirely subjective. How much value does the money have to you ? Is it entirely disposable or is there a queue of things to spend it on ?
Beautifully made and finished mini machines. At these higher price points there are plenty of options but PP is probably the most mainstream.

one measure of a watches value is how it holds its value ........I have owned 3 Patek's and made a profit on all of them when moving them on

I'm betting that you bought them second hand which actually disproves your point!

Also, it's itrelevant - I made profit on a breitling (which I bought new) and I don't think they're a particularly good watch - mine had an ETA!

I think they are convenient and quick but curry from a jar is never as nice as self prepped curry.IMHO
LOL.

They're the best IMO. Still. But I'd probably now look at pieces from the pre Thierry Stern era which are holding their money better and some could argue were made to an even better standard.

If value retention is important I seem to recall reading that PP and Rolex are the best from that viewpoint - that may have changed now though.

From a quality viewpoint I think they are worth it but there are lots of other makers who are of a similar standard (at this level you are really splitting hairs) but PP are still considered the connoisseur's choice.

I would consider Lange and to a slightly lesser degree Moser and Parmigiani to be pretty much on a par with PP and they tend to be a little cheaper but do not hold their value as well - presumably down to the lack of (continuous) history.

I particularly like PP's plain dress models (which, as a general rule of thumb have the distinct advantage of being much more affordable) whereas I generally prefer complicated pieces from other makers.

In short, depends what you want.

I would rather a 2nd hand Royal Oak for £10k, better looking and less known.

A Sicura, really. Ask Willy Breitling.

No of course they are not worth the money. A Casio F98W is all the watch you'll ever need. Anything more than this is a stupid waste of readies.

Even that would be a frivolous waste of money, most phones are able to tell the time, there is a clock on the cooker, public clock towers or you could just ask someone the time. However, that is not really the point.

You're wasting your breath ( or the fora equivalent). I've lost count of the number of pointlessly nicer than f98w watches I own.

Are the watches worth the money? Clearly not. You'd be in denial, or off your rocker to argue that. I agree That's not the point. But that's not what the OP asked.

If he doesn't get it, I'm not going to try to explain.

The people that buy them clearly think so.

No, definitely not worth it...it's clear the best thing to do in life is buy the cheapest, lowest quality of everything you can (as long as it does the job) and then when you die leave a big pile of cash, 40%ish of which goes to the government and the rest to someone else to spend. Happy days.

This type of topic comes up a lot. More often in the watch forum too. Pateks are not an Everyman watch, so the Everyman can't afford it. Not even close. It's natural to question the value of something you can't afford, if you're entirely happy with your Casio telling the time perfectly (which it will) but have a really good think: if you had the money to buy a Patek would you stick to your Casio? Hardly anyone would.

All that is irrelevant because anything for sale has its price determined by what the market is willing to pay. So it cannot be anything other than "worth it".

My only problem with Pateks is that apart from the super exclusive and super expensive low volume models that are in the £100,000k+ range I have never found one I like the look of. The calatrava dress watches are ok I guess but are for occasional wear. I want to like the Nautilus range but find them ugly. In short I'd like a Patek but I don't like them 😄 .

Agreed. I haven't bought one less because of the price, more because I'd struggle to buy anything I don't like the look of.

I asked the question originally because I'd just been looking in a Patek dealer's window and found myself wondering how anyone would want to pay the asking price of some of them when the best of them are pedestrian and the worst bloody ugly.

Yeah. A bit like Porsche and its 911. You'd have thought after decades of just producing further variations on the same design theme, great classic watchmakers like AP and PP would have twigged that the Genta designs of the RO and the Nautilus were really just rather naff.

Just goes to show that you really can fool (almost) all of the people all of the time.

I've certainly been stupid enough to buy into the fantasy. But because there are so many stupid people like me both the porsche and the nautilus could sell for more than they cost. However I'm so beguiled by the nonsense that I'm not in the slightest interested in parting with them even for a profit! What a mug, eh?

White gold Gondolo with blue face. One of the nicest watches I've ever seen.

Interesting how many people think Patek = Nautilus.
There's way more to PP than just the Nautilus. But I suppose what people love now more than anything else are err... "sports" watches.
