Are Pateks worth the money?

A Sicura, really. Ask Willy Breitling.
Be a bit hard, he died in 1978...No new watch over £100 is worth the money you pay for it in any absolute terms, it's just down to whether you perceive the value in it.
If you like Patek Philippes and have the funds, it might be worth it to you. No-one here can make that judgement for anyone else.

The earlier comment about Patek's going up and only making money if bought second hand is not true.
My most expensive Patek is the 5130R (rose gold World Time) which I believe has just recently stopped being made. I bought it new in 2007 when the UK list price was around £17,000 (I got it for £15,000 from Europe due to pure good luck on exchange rates). The last retail price for it in 2016 was £33,400 or thereabouts.
I sold my Officers model 5022 2 years ago to a trader who offered me £20,000 for the World Time so had I wanted to sell I would have made a profit on what was a 7 year old watch I brought new. As for the Officers model, I made circa 55% profit on what I paid new for it back in 2000.
The 5130R appears on the web used from time to time circa £25k. It took me a while to get used to it but it is a lovely everyday watch. As for value, I use a Citizen ltd edition world time which was about £600 on my motorbike adventures :-) Radio controlled for accuracy.
As for are Patek's worth the money? It's all subjective. Are DB5's worth half a million? They don't drive that well but there is something about them.

i think that, ultimately, many people when they can't afford something assume that it isn't worth the money. I guess it helps them deal with the fact that other people have more money than them.
Or maybe some people who could afford one really struggle to understand why they would want to.13m said:

My only problem with Pateks is that apart from the super exclusive and super expensive low volume models that are in the £100,000k+ range I have never found one I like the look of. The calatrava dress watches are ok I guess but are for occasional wear. I want to like the Nautilus range but find them ugly. In short I'd like a Patek but I don't like them ?? .
Agreed. I haven't bought one less because of the price, more because I'd struggle to buy anything I don't like the look of. I asked the question originally because I'd just been looking in a Patek dealer's window and found myself wondering how anyone would want to pay the asking price of some of them when the best of them are pedestrian and the worst bloody ugly.ReaperCushions said:

Genuine question here... removing any emotional reasons for buying a watch...What are you actually paying for with this watch over say a Seiko that looks identical?
Im guessing the pateks are all handmade movements?

The seiko will be more accurate probably. lol

Assuming the member meant Grand Seiko, then possibly, even though the regulation for the regular and hi-beat autos is -3/+5, since they often outperform their stated specs.Im guessing the pateks are all handmade movements?
As for all Pateks using handmade movements – not a chance. Mechanised parts production with limited hand finishing on the “entry level” models.
What’s being paid for is the brand’s cachet, it’s historical achievements, retailer’s very healthy margin.
You do also get a nice looking movement, sometimes one of the thinest with the complications fitted – but according to Philippe DuFour, AL&S, Chopard LUC, AP, and Credor (Seiko), are all considered to be ahead of Patek in finishing terms.
