Just out of interest why those two models? They are both very different watches and as far as I can see the only similarity is the brand.

To answer the question I would go Daytona.
Just like them don't know a great deal about watches but these stood out quite liked the look of the yacht master but been put off those.

I am particularly fond of the Breguet Type XX series (there are lots of different model designations but all are very similar). Whilst it is obviously a pilot's watch it also features the chronograph function of the Daytona and still looks sporty enough to be worn for the same occasions as you would a Submariner - unless of course you were planning on using the Sub for it's intended purpose but most people don't.

I would also look towards Glashutte Original - a very well made product but fairly unknown outside of watch nerd circles so won't impress other "non-watch" people so much - if that concerns you.

I'm not knocking Rolex but there are more imaginative options out there which are often better if you know where to look.

Daytonas are overrated
The big price rise killed em
I like the look, but am unimpressed when I put one on

I've got a GMT Pepsi.
Nice
And a SeaDweller
Beautiful watch.
The Batman GMT is worth a look.
My advice would be to not buy until you see what the watch feels like on your wrist
You'll know the one when you really want it.

I think I'll pop in and have a look I do like the fact the SeaDweller in 44mm and I do like a bigger watch, batman GMT looks lovely must admit are these just as likely to hold value as a sub or Daytona?

I have a 39mm Explorer and tried on a friends black faced Daytona. We both preferred mine, he got rid of his soon after and said he would get an Explorer next.

Try a few on as I was originally going for a Sub, but decided it was just too obvious and immediately recognisable as either a Rolex or a fake Rolex.

My Explorer flies under the radar, I bought a nice watch for me and not to impress others (i am not suggesting that this is your motivation)

Nearly 3 years on and I just don't wear any of my other watches

Thanks Ill take a look at the explorers. This will also be an every day watch for me and to be honest its partly because I've always liked nice watches, partly because I've worked dam hard and can afford it and yea it is to impress others a little I do like a little bit of bling ha!

Based on the pictures and the rolex website the batman GMT seems to be the front runner at the moment.

Daytona price is very poor value for money considering it is a steel chrono, nothing more. By that I just mean that you can get much more interesting/complicated watches for the same money, in precious metal too.

I strongly prefer the sub to the daytona looks/wright feel wise. You should also look at a stainless steel Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore before you make a final decision. Stunning watch, different league to a Rolex which you only know when you handle and try on. The case and finishing standard is far superior and the wrist presence very strong. Very good alternative to a daytona.

AP make about 30,000 watches per year if I remember correctly so much, much more exclusive and interesting..

Personally, I've never understood the hype for modern Daytonas.

If you're wanting a sports Rolex then my money would go on a GMT 'Batman'.

I had a bi colour Daytona a few years ago and it was a lovely watch that i regret selling. Last year I went a bit bonkers and bought all 3 Tudor Black bays and last month added a Sea Dweller ceramic. Hands down I prefer the SD to the Daytona and currently am thinking of flipping the Tudors as I cant see the SD leaving my wrist. New Daytona looks lovely but not at the price they are currently changing hands for. I have my name down for one but can't see me buying when I get offered.

I think current RRP for a date sub is £5700. As an example, an August 2015 is being offered for £4950 on TZ at the moment.

A new ceramic Daytona is around £8250 but there is a long waiting list for them. A friend got in early and got his last month. Sold it straight on to Watch Finder for a £3k profit. Blowers have an unworn example up for £15250.

I'd try and buy a used date sub if you're happy with that.

Never liked the Daytona until I got the chance to buy a white gold one with black face and red Arabic numerals, love it, not fond of any other ones except the new ceramic,

The batman GMT is a great watch, would go used SS sub if it was my first Rolex or Sea-Dweller, not the deep sea though, it's a monstrosity,

I have to agree, I have a white faced Daytona, the only thing I would change it for is a stainless and gold GMT, they look great. Having had a GMT previously I can tell you they look and feel great. If you don't want to loose money the easy answer is Daytona, but as said before, buy because you like it. They will not ever make enough to warrant being called an investment in my opinion. Forget the new Daytona, the wait list is bonkers, as is the price to jump the queue.

Cheers.

How about a Sea Dweller 4000? The case is less 'blocky' than the Submariner and the GMT, and it has the fine adjustable clasp that the GMT doesn't. I never found that easy link thing to be useful - the bracelet is either too snug or too loose with it extended. OMMV of course as we don't all have identical wrists. And it (the SD 4000) isn't as common as either the Sub or the GMT.

I've just bought a Sea Dweller 4000 and would say that it's proportions are pretty much perfect, it feels pretty special.
