Seadweller - wear it or not ...
Discussion
Hello
Firstly I’m a mature old man who is quite capable of making his own mind up except in this instance …………..
I’m not a watch collector. I bought a Rolex Sub / date about 20 years ago . I wear it everywhere except work – I’m an Engineer in Iraq. My work watch cost me 10 pounds – sorry no UK Pound sign on my PC.
In December 2008 I bought a Seadweller . Quite fancied one , and bought it to wear .
In the process of buying it I found out it was one of the last made.
I stupidly put it away and have never worn it. It is new. Stickers , tags , everything ..
Out of sight out of mind ..
I have tried selling it recently to a few reputable dealers who offered me nothing like what I consider the current market value.
I tried eBay once and was flooded with stupid cash offers , people trying to offset my large eBay sellers fees by offering cash but at a reduced price.
Here’s my thoughts – bear in mind I think I know the answer anyway , I’m just asking for a more informed input from a collector maybe …
A/ Just wear it and enjoy
B/ Stick it back in the cupboard for a rainy day.
Your thoughts, please??

Do you want to maximise your return on it? If so, put it back in the safe. If not, wear it knowing you'll get much less for it should you come to sell it.
Dealers aren't going to offer you the 'market value'. That's their sell price. What you'll get is their buy price which as you have found is substantially less. Why would you expect a dealer to pay you the current market selling price? They need to make a profit on it. If you want more for it stick it on the Pistonheads Classifieds.

I am going with ellry’s and grumbledoak’s comment , when I get home on Monday
There is a thread running here – a guy deciding to buy a Sub or a Daytona.
On page two someone is wearing a Seadweller – that’s what started all this off.
Dealers offers ?? 3.8K to 5.0 K.
And yes I am aware of dealers having to make a profit / living.
Thanks for the replies.
I was a bit anxious putting this up as it probably makes me sound like a tit with 2 Rolex's ?

You've got / wear a Sub so not really much different from your SD. visually.
The SD has been packed away for 8 years , for a reason ?
I think you've got both bases covered , wear the sub and keep the SD as a rainy day fund .
If you didn't have the sub I'd be the first to say wear it.
I've got two Daytona 's a white faced that I wear and a black faced which is identical to your SD , packed away for the future .

I'm guessing you're not short of a few quid, so why worry about making a small profit on a watch that you bought as a treat, to wear and enjoy.
Wear it and enjoy it.
This.Wear it and enjoy it.
Ii's not as though it's going to make that much profit that you can retire to the South of France.
FWIW, I bought mine new in 2007, and it has probably doubled in value to what I paid for it, but in the scheme of things it's not that much money.
I wear mine regularly, alternating with a couple of others.
If you took it to a few reputable dealers and they offered you "Nothing like what you thought it was worth" and people on ebay offered what you thought was silly money then realistically, that IS what it's worth.
It's been broken down on various threads on here many times but if a used watch is advertised in a Jewellers window at £5750 they are going to get offers of £5000 and probably end up accepting £5300/£5400.
They have to pay VAT on the difference between their buy in price and sale price, they may well have to warranty the watch, perhaps service it so from £5400 they net I guess £4800. If they have bought that watch for £4000 that means they are making £800 to pay all their bills from, and the watch might take 6 months to sell.
There's no way a dealer will give you for instance £5000 for a watch and put it in the window at £5750 unless they are certain of a very quick sale at full price and that rarely happens.
So your idea of a fair price may be vastly removed from a dealers.
Please don't take offence if I'm telling you things you may already know.

Firstly , no offence taken on your comments.
I agree with what most have said , and yes life is too short.
I'm not loaded by a long shot , but working in an outside toilet like Iraq does have only
one plus side.
I finish my Trip tomorrow , and will be home late Monday.
Tuesday it will be on my wrist.
Thanks for the helpful comments.

"but working in an outside toilet like Iraq does have only

I worked in Iraq from 1983-1988 was a great country to work in, John Laing building the motorways,Shell Bywater, Mivan construction to name a few of the companies in our darts and crib league. Happy days indeed. Many a Friday spent at the Brit Club bar.
Guess we have Bush and Blair to thank for the country being as it is Today.
When I was there they had one Sadamm Hussain now they have thousands of Sadamm one a bees.
Very Sad.

unless it is actually the last one then it's not really any different to any other SD, so it will do what most rolexes do which is at best not lose that much money. I mean the answer is inside you - did you buy it to wear or to keep? What you've said is the former. If you're thinking it's an investment then you'll be disappointed. If you want to sell it then you might be better off doing it now than later. Anyway wear it!!
I bought my Submariner (model 1680, with the red writing on the depth limits) in January 1977 from Hong Kong - duty-free - for about £140. It has served me well: it's been on my wrist for over 750 hours of scuba diving and > 9000 hours of helicopter flying. It keeps flawless time: gains slightly if laid flat and loses a little if upright. I think it's been serviced 5 times.
Although it has been a good investment, it never occurred to me back in 1977 that it would be. I just always wanted one. Great watches and much too good to languish in a box!! Wear it - definitely

you had me till you used the word investment if we're talking pure financial investment then no, watches don't generally make sense. If we are talking about investment in the enjoyment you'll get out of it, then yes great!Although it has been a good investment, it never occurred to me back in 1977 that it would be. Well you are already wearing it already and that is the correct answer to your query. Why buy such a lovely item and not wear it. If you had been over there from 2003 until now you would have not have thought twice about wearing it. Plenty of blokes will not be coming home or will be but with a leg missing or no wrist to wear it on.
All that on top of those back home that are going due to cancer et al.
Enjoy wearing it and if you are still alive in twenty years cash it in if you are desperate.
