I was looking through the Monaco range and liked the look of this one.

Shall I duck for cover? biggrin

To add my two pence to the thread,

Think how & where you will wear this watch,
For best occasions, Weekends & Pub or as a daily?
I've had to deflect the "is it a genuine" question of my Breitling with "yes where I got it from said you can tell its genuine by the off square links on the bracelet" ..... It wasn't worn there again...!
Will it be a keeper or will you want some investment potential,
I posted a fortnight ago a what watch question and ultimately bought a left field U-Boat that has probably lost 50% of it's value, but as its a 50th present and a keeper this is immaterial to me, I assume as it's an inheritance this may be similar in your circumstances.
I'd duck for cover with that monstrosity but that's the great thing about each of us, our individuality and if you have slept on your thoughts and came back thinking this is the one then go for it. (lets be honest 95% wouldn't want a U-Boat)

At your budget the world is your oyster and you will not please everyone with your choice but enjoy it byebye

This is going to be an occasional wearer only and a hand me down to my son eventually so the value isn't really an issue. I'm getting a fairly decent discount so that will do away with the residual price drop so I'm not worried about that. As long as it holds to the price I pay for it then that's good with me. biggrin

I took a break from clothes shopping yesterday and found myself trying on one of these....

No intention to buy, just bored.

An excellent example of the attention to detail that marks TAG out. Having made a feature of screw heads on the dial, they couldn't even get them to line up. It's this sort of thing across all aspects of the watches that makes their watches feel less special than their competitors. Yeah it's a tiny detail, not a big thing but it's all the tiny details that make the difference.

OP I would say go for it. I've just reserved one of these from Beaverbrooks http://m.tagheuer.co.uk/int-en/news/tag-heuer-form... because I want it. I've ordered it with the NATO strap as it completes the look.

Having spent a while looking for one of these to look at it turns out they have been discontinued. I can get a special order but will have to buy it so I'm back on the hunt for a different model now.

the profit on a £4000 TAG watch is £2800 with an additional £675 going to HMRC .....so your buying a watch that costs the manufacturer about £500 ....as I said the profit would make you wince .....it's part of the reason that TAG is one of LVMH's biggest cash cows

If you think profit margins are not similar at other well respected watch makers you are naive. The watch industry demonstrates best the value of brand perception. Tag walk closer to the line than others but it is a balance between extracting the most profit out of people without impacting brand perception. It is called business.

Having said that, there was a conscious effort to bring Tag up to be a more exclusive brand several years ago. This is why they have the calibre 36 and was partially driven by the need to have the 1887 as eta are withdrawing support. However, the whole of LVMH subsequently went through a readjustment of market position and relative to the other brands in the family portfolio Tag's target market was shifted towards the $2-5k market to not step on the toes of Zennith and Hubolt. This shift in market focus has not helped the brand perception. One day they are meant to be competing with Rolex and the next Seiko. This confusion of position in the market has lead to having a broad product range and people comparing none aligned products from different manufacturers. It is the automotive equivalent of all VW products coming with a VW badge. You would have people comparing Skodas to Rolls Royces just because VW have a Bentley (now with a VW badge) in the line up.

Another impact of the market re-evaluation of LVMH was a big step up in the cost of the LV branded bags. My wife gave her mother a "never full" which I think we paid around $800 for in 2011. Today that would be closer to $1400. By doing so they maintain revenue but reduce the number of goods sold.

Can you think of any other brand that does this? (all of them try) but Rolex are one of the most prolific and successful users of this tactic. "We are putting up the price to maintain the exclusivity".

i did buy a new Pebble watch for £140........ complete waste of money .....a bit like a new TAG ......but if OP really needs one then there is outlet village TAG shop near me on the Wirral that flogs them off with 50% discount ...at least then you are only paying double what they are worth and not 4X

and that is one of the reasons I would not buy a Tag .....because you can get a huge discount ........it devalues the marque........for the same money you could buy a Rolex or JLC or for 3k you could buy one of the below in platinum

Each to their own but the date position would do my head in, personally I would weigh it in for the platinum smile.
