I currently own a few watches, nothing special unfortunately. I have just started to get into watches a couple years ago and would really like to buy myself a proper Swiss automatic watch. I have always wanted a Rolex and would love to own one some day. unfortunately i don't really have the money right now to buy one. So I am asking help from you guys.

I have a 3k budget i do not mind going over a few hundred though. From this i would like an automatic Swiss watch. I would ideally like one that would hold its value well. I will not be expecting it to be an investment definitely if buying new.
I would prefer new but i am open to preowned. I would probably wear the watch daily so i would like it to be able to take a bump or too.

Here are some i have my eye on at the moment:

Breitling Colt: I have tried this one in the white dial form and really liked it.

Omega Seamaster: I have heard alot about this watch being very good watch and holding its value quite well.

Tag Heuer Aquaracer: I liked this watch a lot until i tried the colt on but for half the price would it be better for my first watch?

Rolex Submariner: This is the watch i really want but new its nearly double my budget and preowned it is still out my price range. I know this would be the best place to put my money.

So in summary I really want the Rolex but cant really afford one right now. I really like the Breitling Colt for half the price but what would depreciation be like? Your opinions guys please.

I think you save for the sub......... That's the watch you really want and will probably continue to want even if you buy something else! We have all been there....it will be more expensive in the long run!!

Hi Vinchenzo01

On my second 'Quality watch' now smile

Personally my first was a Breitling and it has been faultless so can whole heartedly recommend from my experience,

1, Start with a Omega, Tudor for £1.5 ~ £2k and start to save for the Rolex

2, Go straight on in with both feet and get the Rolex as many jewellers now offer interest free credit

Listen to what others say on here then plough your own furrow

Doing this is just going to put you £3k further from the Rolex you really want.

Get something else in the cheap but interesting class now and wait longer, or finance the Rolex now.

Have to say I agree with all the above, if you want a sub... Get one, it will cost less in the long run.

You can still get 14060 or 14060M, the last of the real Submariners, for not much more than £3k if you dig about and do without box and papers.

The Tudor Black Bay Black is a great looking watch, a bargain at £2300ish, IMHO, with an awful lot of Sub to it.

Slightly OT, but what do you mean by "last of the real submariners"?

I love my Planet Ocean, but if you want a Sub you should wait and buy a Sub. It's a lot of money to spend on something that isn't what you really want.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess it makes perfect sense to save for what I really want not what I just like. Quick question would it be worth paying the extra for a Rolex sub with the date? Would it hold its value more being one with a date?

The old subs were tool watches, they were not blingy. The shiny ceramic bezel, etc make them more jewellery and less tool watches, could not see the RN or Comex using the current Sub.

Maybe classic would be a better description than real, if you get me.

As others have said, buy the Rolex! I wanted a Tudor and ended up buying a Sea Dweller.

In agreement with the others. Mostly.
If you want a sub, then anything else you buy will be "not a Sub" and leave you wondering "what if?"

If I were in your shoes (I'm not, for some reason, as good as they clearly are, I just don't hanker for a Rolex) I'd look for a Tudor as above, but second hand. I'd buy privately to avoid dealer mark up. I'd continue to save for the Rolex, then when the time came, I'd sell the Tudor privately and source a Sub in the same way.

You might find that the Tudor is all the watch you really want and that you don't "need" a Rolly after all. You might not, but buying and selling 2nd hand you won't lose too much on a Tudor over a couple of years.

Ha ha, I did exactly the same. Went in to try on and had every intention of buying a Black Bay (too small), decided to try a Pelagos (too light), GMT black/blue (lovely but small) while I was there, then walked out with a Deep Sea on my wrist. Bit of budget growth all in the space of an hour or so LOL.

That was 3 years ago and I haven't worn anything else from my small collection since.

Agree with everything said above. You'll wear any of the watches above and still wish you had the sub.

When I got my first Rolex (Sea-Dweller) I was in exactly the sam situation, I actually bought a Breitling Superocean which to be fair was very nice but it wasn't the rolex I was after, I got it at a great price so managed to sell it on a year later for what I paid for it. I then bit the bullet and bought the Rolex financing the difference and it was the best thing I could have done. The next jump up again past the likes of a Sub/Sea-Dweller is so large that you'll not be in the same situation pining for something else (until you get a pay rise in work and start looking at AP's, Day-Date's and Pateks!)

I agree...youll allways hanker after a sub.
My first Sub preowned came from Watchfinder. I paid 3.5k so your not far off.
It was without box and papers. However i wasnt going to wear those. Just the watch.

OP - I was in the same position as you.
I got the Colt.
After a couple of months - I wished I had kept saving for Rolex.

A decent watch is what you're looking for. 'Luxury' watch is American hyperbole bullst.
