….and that's before haggling a bit. Ferret around and you'll get a very decent one for £3k, esp. if the £1 strengthens.
As many know there's a date/non-date question. I sold my sub date but kept my non-date. No regrets. Many would disagree.
Great watch, by the way. Absolute all-time classic. All collectors have a sub in their watchbox.
And mine gets plenty of wrist-time - more than any others.

Why are so many subs on watchfinder without box and papers?
Why do the original owners not keep these I would have them in a safe!
Did you keep the packaging for your TV? Those AA batteries? How about the mobile phone or your iPad/tablet thingy? Why do the original owners not keep these I would have them in a safe!
For most normal people (not watch fans) boxes and papers (especially once the warranty expires) are just packaging and worthless paper (In fact, that's pretty much what they are in reality...).
I don't imagine the buyers thought about selling their watches when they bought them and even if they did, they probably had no idea people would pay more just for the original box and receipt!

.... I will be saving up and keeping an eye out for a Rolex sub no date at the right price.
What is it about the Sub that makes it the 'must-have' option for you? Also, I know buying 'used / pre-owned' gets you much better value but if this is a long-term purchase I would seriously look to buy new. There is a 'value' in the experience of buying new, trying different sizes, strap options, colours etc rather than being driven down the more limited choice route of buying used. I bought a new Omega Seamaster PO with bracelet and separate rubber strap with deployment buckle and it still feels special and is a 'keeper' where other nice watches bought 'used' have been sold on.

I would agree with this in part (often there is not always a huge saving on used ones though depending on model) i'm looking for a Rolex myself, and at the moment considering one of the following: -Deepsea d-blue, -GMT Black/Blue or a -Submariner Date Green 'Hulk' and after a recent visit to look and try some on (superb service by the Way) at a dealer in Harrogate, must say the experience was superb.
Some other factors are price of new vs used, take the D-Blue Deepsea, most are fetching £1500 more than list price, and its the same with the GMT Black/blue and the Sub hulk all selling used at more than list, on this basis i'd rather wait the 3-6 months for a new one, than buy a 1 year old one and pay more.
Also the dealer told me that there are a lot of Fake D-Blues on the used market, fake by the fact a Blue face/dial have been added to a standard Deepsea to try get higher prices. the GMT black/blue are selling for £1000 over list used, which makes no sense to me unless your in a rush and must have it now.
The Dealer also explained about the older generation/range and new current ones, where the new models now have a 5 year warranty and do not need a service for 10 years, where as the older ones need servicing sooner, and have only 2 year warranty, so many used ones will be heading out of warranty, and although a watch dealer might add their 'own warranty' this might not cover you to the same level as a Rolex supplied watch and manufacturer warranty.
All valuable info and with no pressure in a friendly helpful manner, so cant fault this.
I personally would try and buy a new one, and appreciate that your not looking directly for the versions i mentioned but its a safer bet.

Thanks everyone for there input and opinions on what I should do. It seems like the right thing to do is to just save to buy the watch I want and not get the second best.

It depends. I was in the same boat as you once. Had wanted a Sea-Dweller for years. When the time came to buy, I lost interest. They are great watches, but I couldn't deal with the idea of wearing EUR 6k on my wrist, and started to find the look a bit boring.I will be saving up and keeping an eye out for a Rolex sub no date at the right price.
Ended up quelling the thirst for a high-end dive watch with a Breitling SO chrono. Have no desire for a SD anymore. Still think they look nice, but would never buy. Maybe give the Colt another look. The previous model is even nicer, IMO.

Nice for the money, even with the scratched bracelet (which a good Cape Cod polish would probably return to very good).

If you buy another watch instead of the sub you will only end up buying the Sub later on. I did just this when I bought an Omega Seamster first but still wanted the Sub and finally bought it later. It was only then I realised I really wanted a Daytona and when I got the Daytona I realised that all along I had really wanted a Panerai and then I realised that it was really an Audemars Piguet that I'd wanted all along. Who'd have thunk it?
Watches can be addictive.

The depreciation on Breitlings, most Omegas and Tags will make you cry and as you trade up it gets even harder.
I agree - finance the Rolex and enjoy nil depreciation and what you want now.
I had a Breitling Colt Transocean, Omega Speedmaster and a Tag and they all got sold once my GMT2 turned up as they never got worn again.
