If you're buying from an AD, you'll be able to reclaim the VAT once you and the watches permanently leave the EU. There is a luxury goods tax and duty into Australia of c10% or so.
Cheers

Interesting because someone has just told me that I won't be able to reclaim the VAT if I have a GB passport.Cheers

That's rubbish. As long as you can prove that you reside somewhere else you are ok. I bought a Panerai 18 months ago. British passport but live in Abu Dhabi, just had to provide all the receipts as usual and my British passport complete with UAE Residents visa. Having A Barth said:

Just to clarify...........I'm a GB resident and will purchase in the UK and take to Oz for my daughter who is now an Aussie resident. Are you saying I can reclaim the VAT? Also, any knowledge of an import duty that may be charged?.....thanks.shopper150 said:

Unfortunately, you won't be able to claim the VAT back, it only applies if you intend to leave the EU for more than 12 months.Apologies if this has been said before but the Watches Of Switzerland outlet in Terminal 5 at Heathrow gives 20% off everything, no matter where you're travelling to, regardless of in or out of the EU, irrespective of whether you are a UK resident or not. Plus you get another 1% back via a Heathrow loyalty card to spend when you travel next time.
They're an authorised dealer for everything they sell, plus you get a 60 day no-quibble return policy and goods can be returned from anywhere in the world.
It's an Aladdin's cave with nearly everything in stock. If you want to make sure that they've got the item you're after, you can phone and arrange this before you travel to the airport. I just saved a packet on a Bell & Ross when traveling out to Majorca 2 weeks ago, and have my eye on an Omega and IWC for next time.
The only thing is, they don't carry Rolex. I was told that this was because of the Rolex concession a few doors down (apparently this is also owned by the WoS/Mappin&Webb/Goldsmiths chain). I popped in there to see if somehow they had the new Daytona - they didn't, not surprisingly.
Anyway, if you're interested, the phone number for WoS in Terminal 5 is 020 8283 6300. I dealt with 'Ambreen' who was very helpful and easy on the eye too! She'll be able to confirm their discounted prices plus I'm sure she'll let you know the contact details for their Rolex sister outlet and what discounts might be available there.

And presumably you're meant to pay duty when you bring the watch back into the country?
That's between you and your conscience. Some people say it's a discount that's "equivalent" to not paying vat but whether or not you've actually paid vat, I'm not sure. I'm sure someone more knowledgable will able to confirm or otherwise. I'm guessing that since you've bought it in the UK, it must be vat paid.
