Hi all,

Looking to spend around £500 and would like to buy my first automatic watch.

I currently have 2 TW Steel watches, a 45mm canteen on a black leather strap and a 48mm pilot on a black leather strap with red stitching.

I also have a MVMT and a Sekonda but these don't get worn anymore.

I'd like an automatic watch as all of my current watches are Quartz.

I love the Submariner look and want a bracelet strap as my 2 mainly work watches at the moment are both leather strap.

I'm quite a big guy so a big face doesn't look stupid.

There's a couple of TW Steels that I like but I'd prefer something different.

I love the steinharts but I'd prefer to try something on rather than order online.

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

That's lovely!

I'm leaning towards this at the moment but I'd really rather try it on / buy it in person....

Longines Hydroconquest 41mm? Just over budget but a nice watch.

I think you can post the Steinhart back if you don't like it?

They do an auto version as well, price is about on budget. Well worth a look if you want something similar to a Submariner without it being a copy.

Sorry I can't look up the exact URL, but you should be able to find it quite easily.

If you're in central London through the week, feel free to take a look at my Steinhart Ocean 500. Not for sale but it'll give you a chance to try before you buy. I'm very impressed with it, comfy and light, and well made.

I would look at

Squale 1521
https://www.chrono24.co.uk/squale/1521-black-polis...

Steinhart Ocean
https://www.chrono24.co.uk/steinhart/ocean-two-bla...

Both brands have various models at your price point. Some look more "Rolex sub" homage than others - depends on if you like that look. Colleague in the office has the Steinhart and it's a very nice watch for the money.

You are also getting close to Oris territory at that budget if you want something a bit more well known

Stretch the budget and look at a Chris Ward C60 Trident Pro 600 in 43mm

Just bought the 38mm for my son for his birthday and I'm very impressed with it - feels nice to the touch with a good weight. Bezel ratchet is a bit agricultural, but how many times do most non-divers use it?

The similar C60 Trident 300 is well within budget

Ocean 44 is definitely at the top of my list at the moment. If I can order it and they'll take the return if I'm not 100% then that may work.

My only concern is the size of the face compared to the thickness of the bezel.

I'd go for the Ocean One but I feel anything less than 45mm will feel small due to my other watches. So the 44 is probably the smallest of want at the moment. I could do with trying on some 42/43mm's I guess.

Hi Steve

I'd caution you against another Quartz,
With a Quartz you take the view it's disposable due to needing a new battery (MVMT and a Sekonda anyone?), where as with an automatic movement it's just more "special" in my humble eye's..smile

You've highlighted great taste in styles although I prefer the Ocean Vintage Military or 500 Premium
https://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/diver-watch/oce...
https://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/diver-watch/oce...
over the 44 with it's "I'm an Ocean 44" on the bezel

I go from a 34 to a 53 and once wearing you forget the size so don't get hung up on a 2~4cm difference in case size
Christopher Ward get a lot of love on here and appear good value

Don't forget to post the resultant purchase once made

Or the Ball I posted earlier before I get it smile

Hi mate,

Yes I've totally ruled out another Quartz, I want a proper automatic.

I'm not interested in the titanium ocean. I like a bit of weight.

I know what you mean regarding the rehault. But everything I've read states it looks great in real life.
