Hello,

As you can imagine, I'm in the market for a new watch.

Does anyone know of a watchmaker that produces watches of comparable quality to a Rolex or Omega, for around £500.

Not long ago, I almost bought a green submariner, as I loved the feel of the watch. In all honesty £6,000 is too much for me to shell out right now, it would be grossly irresponsible to do so.

The best watch I've owned so far is a gold Sturhling skeleton type watch, which cost me £150. It feels of decent quality and I enjoy wearing it.

I'm looking for a bracelet type watch, so something similar to a submariner, but not restricted to dive watches. I'm more concerned with the quality of the materials, rather than the movement, though I would like an automatic.

I like this one, as a variation of what you posted. I've not heard of the brand before, I suppose I've only really been exposed to what's in the shop windows.

I'd consider Japanese or German too.

I say that as £500 just doesn't get you much Swiss that isn't simply about marketing IMO.

Someone was bound to mention them sooner or later:

You'd get a used Longines Hydroconquest for around £500, or a new Quartz.

Hi Sparkzz

Yes I saw the green combat but was so,so about it,
(that's the beauty of watches ... we all like something different and as long as you like it then that's all that matters...

review some of the £500 watch threads on here

for some more left field choices and judgements

This is good. Most of these watches look very similar to Rolex models. Is a Steinhart comparable in terms of quality?

Think you know the answer to that one already. The difference in quality may not be as much as the difference in price may suggest, but there is a difference.

I've just taken delivery of the Steinhart Ocean Forty Four - basically a Rolex DSSD look / homage.

I love it. It's my first automatic watch (I've also got a couple of Quartz TW Steels).

Service from Steinhart was good. They do have a new IT system so it took a few extra days to dispatch the watch. It came in a lovely big black leather box, within a White Steinhart cardboard box and then in a very thick buble wrap bag.

The quality is very good but things like the strap imo is where you can feel the slight quality difference. Saying that I'm still very impressed.

The watch has a good weight to it and has already sparked 2 conversations and a fair few glances.

I also considered a Christopher Ward Trident and the Steinhart Ocean One but decided I preferred the DSSD homage over a Submariner homage.

I've had two Steinharts as beaters (Vintage and GMT) and the quality isn't bad to be fair. Strap, naturally is cheap and the movements are reasonably good timekeepers. bang for buck, yes, they're not bad.

Other worthy considerations are Hamilton Khaki and Certina DS at that price point.

Seiko sarb033 (or 35). You won't find better quality for the price.

+1. Seiko and Orient Star are both great, as are many German brands.

Swiss quality for £500? Don't kid yourself. £500 buys you a really nice Seiko, even the JDM models, which are 100% in house and will beat anything that pretends to be Swiss in the same price range (and beyond). If you want real Swiss quality on a budget your starting point is a Tudor.

Tissot - auto swiss watches for circa £500

https://www.houseofwatches.co.uk/tissot-watches/?f...

Also I so wanted to like tudor but the ones I looked at looked mass produced and unfinished. At the price I was looking at that not what I was expecting.
