I didn't realise that they were making the Monaco in the 1930's.
Lol Are you suggesting that the Gallet/ Brevet 189190 first produced in1936 was in fact the first water resistant rectangular watch a full 33 years before the Monaco?I have a couple of friends that are of the 'Rolex' persuasion who really don't like TAG watches, be it original Heuer or newer TAG Heuer.
That be said, I still bought a modern Carrera and love it:
It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it means a lot to me (my present to myself for becoming a father) and was my first venture into the world of 'proper' (£300+) watches.
It also has the bust of Juan Manuel Fangio embossed on the rear, which I think every petrolhead should appreciate!

It's hard to have much respect for the opinion of people who don't like the original Heuers.I don't own one, but they seem to exude an effortless cool that no Rolex could ever hope to have.
Sadly all TAGs seem to dilute that to some degree, even iconic models like the Monaco, but it's still one of the great designs, I think (I really like the Monza too).

The original Heuers from the 60's and early 70's are now very sought after and can fetch big money. I have GMT that I bought new in 1970. My son has a collection of over 40 early models, some are worth $100,000.
Jack Heuer was a visionary and started the trend of tying watches to motorsports - TAG Heuer are now starting to realise what a heritage they have and hopefully they will do something with this history....

From what I've found, TAGs are by no means the most expensive watches with ETA movements - don't some Tudors use them?
Tudors used ETA up till very recently where they became in house. I believe you can tell the difference by whether the dial has a rose, or a shield..But besides the point, yes you are spot on. I personally think the worst offenders are IWC for the expense in my humble opinion, considering they are also ETA movements. But granted they are heavily modified above factory specifications.
The bottom line is though, is that a watch is always more than the sum of it's parts. There are plenty of in-house movements that are alot worse than an ETA movement, and I wouldn't get too caught up in the whole movement quality thing. I prefer to look at the dial quality, the finish on the case, and a bunch of other things. Modern Tags are finished well, have solid movements, are priced reasonably well, but lack originality.
Still...I love my Monaco
My first " decent " watch was a Tag 2000 Black face , nice watch but possibly a bit small now , never been worn for over 10 years I reckon.
Not much haggling got me 20% discount so I bought it knowing it was never going to be about rising values , but to be honest I always buy watches because I like the look of them and how they feel wearing them rather than as an investment.
Buy what you want to buy , it's all about what you want , the opinions of folk who post on here who you'll probably never meet are totally irrelevant.

Well I'm a relatively new watchist so came into this odd world with no bias about what widget was designed where or who gets which part of the mechanism from where etc I just had a look round for a bit of a treat with a reasonably respectable budget and just liked the design of Tag and have a Carrera and also ordered a James Hunt F1 which is a "cheap" watch but I just liked the look of it.
I'm on my 12th Tag now, Senna Edition F1 with the Link style bracelet, and love it.
Whilst I value and understand the reasoning behind some peoples' dismissal of TAG as a brand, I admire the motorsport connection and am pleased to wear the watch I want to wear, not the watch that I am told to wear by strangers on the internet.
