I just asked my wife if she'd heard of zenith watches and she hadn't.
Mine hasn't either. The advantage being that she'll have no idea how much I spent on mine.

Well, I've worn my Rainbow (not Flyback) pretty much every day for twenty years, and I still love it!

I'm a big fan of Zenith. Purchased this a few years ago on eBay for peanuts as spares/repair. Got the crystal replaced and serviced to get it working only to drop it 1ft onto the table the next day when putting it on a perlon strap. furious

With apologies for the lack of an actual image because Photoshop is down.

I had one of these on my "watch bucket list" for a long time, and finally bought one a few months ago. As somebody has mentioned above, I wanted to own an El Primero powered watch. Sadly, a Daytona is out of reach.
Hah. I first looked at that and thought it was horrible. But actually it's quite cool isn't it.
It is. A great big lump of 80's magnificence, especially on that particular bracelet. My only criticism is that the crown is difficult to use due to the (very cool) chronograph pushers, and it's as well that it's an automatic because it's a pain to wind, for the same reason.

I absolutely love it!

From what I have seen very nice watched, interesting and eye catching design aesthetics with great movements- extremely underrated.

Good value on the used market, particularly the master/annual calendars.

They are however as mentioned not a strong brand at all so do suffer huge depreciation. If looking at a new (ish) model like an el primero chronograph I personally would not buy unless at least 25% off retail, and for an older complicated piece more like 35%-40% off the original list price.

Ultimately would prefer to invest in a JLC as a complicated piece- a level above Zenith IMO at least from watches I have tried on.

The watch I always wanted and I was delighted to find a heavily discounted EP Port Royal V in the LVMH shop at Bicester Village c15 years ago. I still think it's a rather elegant watch. Needs mending again at the moment though frown

I went back for another look at the Rainbow Flyback, managed to get a bit more off the price, so I bought it. Lovely watch, but I'm a little disappointed that the bracelet is pinned, not screwed.

Now I need to decide which of my rarely-worn watches to take in for him to sell on commission - TAG Targa Florio, Breitling Superocean 42 or Tudor Chronautic. I'm leaning towards the Superocean, as it's a bit bling for my tastes, and it should fetch almost enough to cover the cost of the Zenith.

Good man! Let's have a look - is it the same as mine posted above or the new version? Who is/was the retailer?

Same as yours, but tritium dial (T Swiss T at the bottom of the dial). Unfortunately the papers are stamped, but not dated.
I bought it from Wearnes, a local jeweller with 2 shops.

I decided to take all 3 of the watches that I mentioned above in today, for them to sell on commission. If they all sell, I'll be looking for something else, maybe an orange bezel Planet Ocean?

Any love for the 'Captain'? Overlapping sub-dials are a bit of an issue...

I don't mind the overlapping sub-dials, but I don't care for the contrasting date window.

At least the overlap doesn't stop you reading the minute subdial, as it does with all the modern iterations of the tri-colour design - still scratch my head about that one.

(C. Hodinkee)

Perhaps more of a crime getting the subdials squished in the centre (the 'Captain') as the EP wasn't designed for that case size... wink
